Help Me Decide

Putting together a build for a new hunting/plinking rig. I am going with 6.5x47. What length should I cut the barrel? I want something a little handier, but don't want to give up too much velocity. The barrel is a Bartlein 1:8 Whitley Palma. I was thinking 22" or 24".

With a 8 Twist you will have to shoot 120 gr + .That creates a% fill problem and %of powder burn problem. The difference is about 20 FPS per inch. I would go with 26''. Larry

I am trying to stick with 130 grain or heavier. I thought the 1:8 would be optimal for that. Seems like you guys are saying otherwise.

I think you will be fine shooting 130+ bullets out of a 1:8 twist. I shoot one with 140 VLD'S and it shoot's great, a few fps is not worth sweating over. 24" for a handy hunting rifle is about right 26" max.

jpistolero02,

I built my 6.5X47 to hunt whitetails here in Pa and antelope and Muleys out west. I finished my rig off at 24" It handles very well in the hardwoods and from my treestand and still gives me enough velocity with 130Gr. Bergers to take antelope at 500+ yds. An 8 twist is fine and will stabelize 120,130, and 140gr.bullets.
