Help me decide on a barrel

I'm getting my Remington 700 .30-06 rebarreled (amongst other things) and need some advice on which contour and twist to get. I want this to be a precision rifle that I can also hunt with.

What I'm currently thinking is a 26" Bartlein #5 Standard Target Contour with a 1/11 twist rate.

Pros/Cons? Suggestions/Recommendations?

I am doing something very similar. I think anything heavier than a rem varmint contour will be too heavy to be a hunting rifle. Unless you hunt from your truck. Your barrel will be 6 lbs alone, so I bet your rifle will be 12-14lbs. Pretty heavy.

+1, a #4 would be my heaviest contour for hunting & then I would flute it. 11 twist would be good.

I've got a 280ai with a 25" #3 rock barrel. With a mcm stock and bdl bottom metal it weighs 10lbs scoped (20oz). I wouldn't want anything heavier for a hunter and am almost considering selling or trading this for something lighter.

Personally I will never buy a 30 cal barrel in anything slower than 10 twist just for the flexibility. A 10 twist can shoot light weight bullets fine but a slower twist may be on the edge if you choose to shoot any kind of heavy bullets. Say a 210 grain of some sort.

I was basing my twist decision on this article.

This gentleman say the 1/11 is more flexible.

I think I'm gonna go with a 26" medium Palma contour. It will weight about the same as the Rem V contour.

What's y'all's opinion on 700 triggers? Are the stockers good if they're tuned? How about X-Mark Pro or aftermarket?

The 11 twist will work on bullets up to the 210 VLD but won't work with the 215 or bigger. Either twist will work with the 30-06. Matt

If you are hunting,a shilen is a great little trigger to use.I have a couple and they are decent. They are not a jewel but very good and way better than the remington original.
