help me decide on 6.5 x 47 lapua chamber specs...

hi everyone,

I just recently placed an order for a custom built rifle (decided on kelby's) in 6.5 x 47 lapua.... i Have time to send them a reamer if i want to have the chamber built to a certain spec...

im curious what you might be shooting successfully with your 47?? what are your chamber specs? what reamer did you use? what bullets are you shooting and at what range???

I'm using 40 grs. of H4350 with a 140 Berger "hunting" VLD for 2855 FPS. 30" barrel. The freebore is .226"
I sent a round to Dave Kiff with this bullet loaded the way I wanted it with the boattail junction about 2/3rds. down the neck.
This gun shoots very well at 1K at Williamsport 1K club. I shoot with the bullet jambed .015 into the lands.
You won't be dissapointed with this round. Don't let the F-Classers tell you the 140 is too heavy! Or that the small rifle primer is too small!
Primers are CCI 450's.

I am running a .292 no turn neck in my 6.5X47 and a loaded round is right at .2895-.290. Freebore is .123 and is perfect for 123-130 class bullets. I ran 123 MK's last year in it with great accuracy out to 600 yards with 41.2 grains of H4350. If wanting to shoot 139-142 class bullets your freebore may be around .155 or more. When i build another one I will spec out a .290 neck chamber for the heavy bullets and just do a lite clean up on the necks. I'm sure others will chime in including Eric who helped me out last year when I was just starting out with it.

Yes I have already had a correspondance with Erik through PM's who has been very kind in sharing his expertise.

He said he specs out a .290 neck and prefers .004 clearence all the way around.

necks turned to .011

.011 x 2 =.022 thicknes of necks

.022 + .264 (bullet size) = .286 neck diameter.

.290- .286 = .004 clearence all around.

I would like to shoot bullets in the 140 gr ballpark i think, but unlike erik I will not be shooting scenars exclusively (I dont think anyway) because I cannot buy them locally and they are more expensive than other comparable bullets. I am interested to see what you everyone that is shooting this caliber with and what they have found to work with regard to chamber specs. also does anyone know what the thickness of the factory lapua necks are in this caliber? thanks
