Help me choose a Barrel

I have a 16" Stag. Very fun to shoot, will shoot 1" ten shot groups. I see many pics of other guys that shoot @ 100 yds also, of one hole groups, just amazing, using the AR-15.

I once saw a picture a guy posted of 15 rounds of Sierra 69 MK, into 1 hole a dime could cover. Now thats a good rifle. And many times I see other guys posting in other forums of pictures of multiple shots, where a dime could also cover.

I want to add a barrel to my Stag too. Something that shoots extremely well, something around 1/2" @ 100 yds. I know there are many good barrel makers out there, WOA, Wilson, Krieger, etc..,fill in your favorite maker here __________ ).

Not sure who to choose. What are my chances of getting a really ok barrel, say 1" groups, and that would be the best it would do? Is it hit a miss most of the time, on how well a barrel will shoot? Which brand can I be confident of that will shoot very well?

I know most companies that make barrels can't make guarantees as to what I wish for in a barrel. Which I understand. But what if I buy a Brand A barrel, only to find it shoots only 62 gr Vmax, and only that, around 1" groups of ten. Is that what most of you have experienced ?

Is there really a company that I could buy a 20" Bull Barrel from with confidence? Seems like those barrels that do shoot one hole groups, the owners are very lucky. Or was that the standard for the barrels made by that certain company? I really want to be that guy. Owner of a rifle that shoots one hole groups. Am I asking too much? And isn't that a goal that is attainable? Deep down inside, don't we all want to shoot one hole groups, all day?

Where do I go? Where should I start? There are so many out there, like these below:

Galati

Accuracy System

Krieger

Les Baer

RRA

Shilen

WOA

AR15 Products

Thanks

Geesh! What was I thinking? Coming here and asking for advice from experts?

I just noticed, this is one of those forums where, everyone just reads, and leaves without helping with any advice at all.

I've got two Kieger barrels one 14.5" and one 24" , 1-7 twist and they will both shoot the 55gr V-max, 69gr, 77gr and 80gr Sierra Match King into dime sized groops for a bench and they hold 1/2 moa out to 500yds, with a good scope.

Both guns use free loating hand guards and are chambered for the 5.56 Nato and both guns are shot with and without silencers with no ill effect on accuracy

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :D

I hear good things about Krieger.

Well so far, here and other forums thats 4 votes for Krieger.

The reality is, no matter what barrel you choose the real important thing is have a competent gunsmith chamber it for you. I've seen Adams&bennet barrels shoot smaller groups than anything factory. If you buy an aftermarket barrel, have it chambered by a good 'smith, it will probably shoot straighter than you or I ever will. The best test of accuracy in your situation is to let someone else, preferably someone who shoots little bitty groups routinely) run a group through the gun. This isn't meant to be insulting, but maybe its not the gun or barrel, but the operator of the trigger. Just my $.02.

Thanks redneck,

No offense taken. That was one of the things I did recently with a rifle I had built. I was getting 1/2" groups. I had 2 friends take the rifle and shoot it, one got 1" groups the other friend was able to shoot 1/2" groups. But I have shot 10 rounds and 4 rounds into 1 hole before, but no longer is the case. Shoots around 1.00. Sometines 1/2", but rarely.

I hear ya on the chamber part. Do you know about the relation between the bolt and the barrel extension?

Should the bolt seat against the end of the barrel as well as the inside of the extension?

I have this other rifle, that the bolt when inserted with out a round, will have a small amount of slop between the inside barrel extension and the end of the barrel. Say about .008. Does that matter. Or is it just how the round is chambered, and how well the bolt holds the case against the bolt face, and the barrel extension?

Thanks
Lonzo

While I have never used them, I have heard GREAT things about him. They offer shillem douglas, A&B, er pac-nor,krieger and others. They have a varity of contours and chamberings too.

I have also noticed that the AR's that shoot really well, if you look in the barrel with a bore scope the gas hole is in the bottom of the rifling. Some that shoot not so good have the gas hole drilled between the top & bottom.

Wow!

Good point Macs. I have always wondered about that one. I think I have a rifle where the gas hole is through the barrel and not the rifling. Hmm..something to ponder.

sorry guys let me clarify I mean the gas port is drilled between the lands & grooves in the rifling so that part of the hole is on the land and part in the groove. This will peel the jackets off the bullets.:)

Wow, it's OUR fault YOU didn't do your own research? You've asked questions that are SO broad they're unaswerable. LOTS of us spend lots of time helping others on these forums. Do your own research, narrow your questions, and come back.

You were there when I did my search here last tuesday, thursday, and the week before, right? Oh, wait, you couldn't have been, how would you know? Assuming one knows is actually very arrogant.

Do us all a favor, and just move on. This ain't no left wing liberal forum. Or either do we appreciate being under your command. You can't control us, so why try? Go save a tree. Let freedom ring!
