Help from the 6mmPPC guys!

I am using the Hornady OAL gauge to check seating depths of my 6PPC, when I run the bullet into the lands there is probably .005 of bullet in the case, how deep do you seat and and is this normal? I am using some really old 6mm Metzger bullets. (yes, I got them from James Messer, God rest his soul), the gun I have he did for me back in the late 80's and it has never been shot, that is about to change! Hall 151M receiver and not sure of the stock and barrel. Any help would be appreciated and an update on bullets LOL, I did purchase some Berger BT Target 65 grain. The old Metzgers are flat base. I've been out a LONG time so any help and guidance would be appreciated.

What size are the bullets ? Back then a lot of guys were using 750 and 790 jackets. The Bergers are on 825 jackets.
Do you know what reamer was used to cut the chamber / Back then 50,60 and 70 free bores were common.
Put those two thing together and there would be the issue you are addressing.

It really depends on the shape of the bullet and the bullet bearing length, ClassCat has it correct. You need to look at using bullets made on .825 jackets. I am not sure if the Berger 65's are on 825 jackets but I know the 68 grains are. I make my own bullets and have a number of point-up dies. The amount of the bullet in the case can vary from .200 to about nothing like you have experienced. You will have to just search until you find one that works for you.

Off topic but I too have some old boxes of Metzger bullets for a 6ppc in my closet. Cheers.

My general rule of thumb, and it's just that, mine, and might be wrong.... Is that the bullet should be seated to a depth at least as wide as the bullet.

Thanks for the answers guys! Appreciate that, I'll measure and let you know. @BartsBullets what are most using that shoot BR in the 6PPC? Flat or boat tail? I'll never be a world contender but I do strive for perfection!! And wouldn't mind taking a couple of bucks from my buddies at the range......;-)

Hey guys! I just saw this! Currently returning from a low country boil at the Cool Acres 600 yards match.

You may want to try the 68 ultras or Watson’s flatbase. That your best bet for getting into the rifling.

yikes, blast from the past. I have a ppc built by James on a hall action (serial is 150 something) that I bought in 90-91. I also have close to 1k of his 68gr bullets. rifle shoots crazy to this day, probably 400 rounds on it. I love that thing, I call it ugly cause I never had it painted or anything(still has a sheetmetal buttplate held on with panhead screws!!!!). anyway, I hope you enjoy yours the way I have enjoyed mine. shoot small and God bless. bryant. :)
