HELP FOR 600 YARDS

Have a opportunity to shoot 600 yards for the first time, but there are some requirements. Must be on paper with no keyholes within 3 shots or you can
not participate. Have only shot short range, therefore I need all the help I can get.

This what I have:
Factory Savage Model 12 Bench Rest 12 twist
Sightron III 10x50 1/8 click, std weaver rail & rings

Powder: Varget & H4895
Bullet: Berger VLD 168
Primers: Federal 205 & GM205M, CCI 450 & BR-4
Brass: Lapua Palma

Is it doable with what I have?. If not what do I need?

Any information would be appreciated, including a starting point on scope adjustment.

Thanks

Depending on your velocity, I would bet that if you get it sighted in at 300 yards BEFORE the match, you will need to come up about 9 m.o.a. >> almost one complete turn on your elevation turret on that scope. You will be within "striking distance" of the 10 ring... Go and enjoy!

as Ben says ,,,,plus ,,if you are sighted in at 100 yds,,,go up ~12 moa.....when at the range if there is a dirt bank or clay birds ,,,shoot at something there and watch for the splash of the impact ,,then put the crosshairs where you aimed and then turn the turrets and walk the crosshairs to where the bullet hit !!!! you are there,,,,Roger

They do not allow bank shots or clay shots. You have to have your scope adjusted and a load that will not key hole and on paper within 3 shots or go home!

Any recommendations on loads with what I listed?

I would try 45.0 grs of Varget with a BR-4.. Obviously you don't have time to develop a load>> but that will get you on paper and you will do "decently".... So now you have all you need to "get started" and shoot the match... Remember MOST VLD's like it "about" 10K INTO the lands..

Gentlemen - thanks for all the information. I will try some of the loads that have been suggested and zero at a 100 yard range. I will read Erik's thread and work from there.
This is not a match, but an evaluation process in order to use the range. It is part of their range rules and the range officer will evaluate your ability.
If you can meet the requirements then you can participate in future matches. I really want to try long range and will work on accuracy once I'm allowed
to use the range to practice and work on loads. There is a waiting list, so not sure how long it will be, want to get the best start I can get.
Thanks!

Your load and gun are capable, but the elevation dope people are giving you is wrong . From your 100 yd zero, come up 1moa fir 200yds, up 4 moa from 100for 300 yds, and up 15 moa from your 100 for 600 yds. Good luck to you and wAtch the wind

Flatland shooter, DO NOT try to read my entire thread on load development because you will run out of time if you try. Read the first page only and try to understand how it works. Then do the powder charge test and post a picture of your target. We can help you from there on.

Akajun, they have been telling him 14-15 MOA from 100, why are they wrong?

Flatlander - I would buy a box or two of Federal gold metal match 168 gr and get the gun sighted in at 100 yds. With your gun, you should get a muzzle velocity of around 2750 fps. From 100 yd zero you will need about 13 1/4 MOA up to get to 600 yd zero. I would do this first in case you get to the evaluation time before you can develop a load.

Second, I would develop a load using the information on Erik's thread.
Here is the load information from Hodgdon's website for the 168 SMK.

Bullet Powder Start wt Max wt COAL Max Vel. Pressure
168 Sierra MK Varget 42.0 46.0 2.800" 2731 50,600 CUP

Send me a PM with your load data after you work it up and I'll run it on Quickloads to get you and idea of velocity so you can get you come-ups.

Erik - after reading page #1, this is my take. I'm looking for the center of the group from 3 different loads that have the same relationship with the dot in the bull from the vertical position only? Then work on seating depth in .003 increments to tighten the group. With the components I listed, where should I start? If it stops raining, I should be able to get to a 100 yard range tomorrow.

Tom E - I'll reply

BCoates - thanks for the info.

Post your question on the 100 yard load development thread please so we don't hijack this one.

handloader program at the MV 2731

Flat Land Shooter

These are the increments I use when going from one range to the next for my Savage 12 F-T/R shooting 168-gr SMK BTHP with 45-gr Varget with an average speed is 2900 fps.

100 yd = 0
200 yd = + 1-3/8 MOA
300 yd = + 2 MOA
600 yd = + 10-1/8 MOA

So from 100 to 600 I add 13-4/8 MOA.

Good luck!

Nando

I noticed you have a Savage bench rest rifle. You need to find out what position you're going to be shooting from for the evaluation. Bench or prone. Practice accordingly after load development. The high power ranges I've shot on don't have benches. The savage bench rest doesn't appear to have a place to attach a bi-pod. If you're going to have to shoot prone, then practice prone using a front rest/rear bag.
