help deciding on new scope for hunting and targets

Background: Looking for a scope for hunting and long range shooting (targets or varmints like coyotes or hogs). My rifle is a Savage 10 Precision Carbine in .308. It won't be going on missions overseas. Shooting will be at a variety of distances not just one distance. I have a good rangefinder.

I want a variable scope with either mil/mil or moa/moa. I've been researching the following (yes, I've used the search function extensively):

Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP variety of reticles (new models)($850)
Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44 LR IRMAO or MD/CM (new models)(guessing $999 for IRMOA and $750 for MD/CM)
Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 (zero stop? TMR, mil/mil or NP-R1 moa/moa?)($1500 - 1800 depending upon options)

The Vortex are just now coming into dealers hands after a delay due to problems with the first batch last summer. That makes me a little leery. Vortex CS has excellent reputation.

Sightron has an excellent reputation. But, these are new models. Availability is 60 - 90 days out per Sightron USA.

Nightforce is available now. For my purposes, should I get the zero stop? Since I have a good range finder, I could save some money by going with moa/moa instead of mil/mil (not a significant amount).

Based upon research here, I've left off Leupold due to numerous comments about price for what you get.

Help!!!!!

If you can afford it, nightforce is a no brainer. The other scopes are good, but nothing is as durable, repeatable, clear, as a nightforce. Zero stop is cool but the scope costs enough as it is for me. If I was doing alot of night tactical/ or maybe some hog type stuff Id consider it.

Why not a bushnell 4200 or 6500.I still dont like the side focus as I never can get it just the way I need it in focus. I have a leupold 6.5x20x40 and it works fantastic on groundhogs and longer range shooting. But if you are shooting out past 600 yds you will need more power to scan for your quarry.I also have a 4200 in 8-32x40 and that is great with no problems and crystal clear.

All of the scopes that you listed are quality, but the Nightforce takes it. I would opt for the moa/moa with the NP-R1, but mil/mil will work fine as well. I do however far prefer the NP-R1 reticle. The new MLR2 appears to be a little more like the NP-R1, but for mil. These are not on the market just yet though.

Of the 3 on your list and if you can shell out the dough get the NF. Or another option is an older Vari-X III Leupold 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 with 30 MM tube and side focus. Excellent scopes, and they can be found on ebay. I do not buy the post 2004 VXIII Leo's as IMHO their quality went down.

know a few people who bought Haskamaw scopes and they like those a lot. always thought the qaulity of the glass was there...and then while talking around during the SHOT show in vegas i came to find out that Huskamaw scopes are using Nightforce glass....which i did not know until then.

i'm not sure what Huskamaw offers for reticles though......

the 5-20 Huskamaw should retail around $1100 if i remember correctly

The Huskemaw has an awesome Hunt Smart reticle with its one MOA spaced verticle hashes on the horizontal crosshair. Combined with the Rapid Field Ballistic Compensator Turret and a range finder, you will make accurate shots out to 20MOA away with one revolution of the turret. The zero stop works well. I own several for my hunting and varmint rifles. A little underpowered for F-class. The R & D for this scope was done by the big company who makes a similar powered scope.... www.huskemaw.com

I am a stocking dealer, let me know if you would like more information. pullbanger@aol.com
