Help deciding on an anschutz

I know two things about anschutz. They make a ton of different models, and I want one.

Problem is I don't know which one I want!

Looking for a sporter model in .22lr for squirrels and general shooting fun. Any particular models I should be looking for?

These are nice http://www.gunsamerica.com/947435475/Anschutz_Savage_Bolt_Action_Clip_Fed_22_Mag.htm

You might consider the Anschutz 1710 or the 1712. The 1712 is a VERY popular rifle in the hunter class in metallic silhouette shooting.

Depends on your budget. Their vaunted Model 54 will generally cost more than their 64. However, if you shop hard, you just might find a used 54 that won't cost more than a new 64. But there's lots of competition for such deals, so you'll need to be quick and bold.

GunBroker.com seems to be the best source to see who's selling what, new or used. However, if you want to keep it simple, then just contact Neil at ISS (in Texas) or the good people at Champion's Choice (in TN). Their new prices are very competitive, and better than most.

I bought a gently-used Savage Anschutz Model 54 Sporter at the beginning of this year, for $995 plus $30 shipping to our FFL. Savage had an importation deal with Anschutz from about 1964 to 1981. The only Savage aspect to it is their name stamped in the barreled receiver, and the drilled/tapped scope mounting holes (which are slightly different than Anschutz standards, annoyingly!).

You can read more about Anschutz on www.rimfirecentral.com.

Buy whatever you see and like and know that you have a Very nice rifle. The 54 action guns (~2,000.00) are the choice of "us snobs" ;D but a 64 actioned gun (~1,100.00) usually shoot extremely well..

As BOhio suggests - look at Rimfirecentral.com

I have a 54, it is very nice looking and very accurate.

I also have a 1451, it is cheap, very light weith and enough accurate to shoot a stone at 300!

depend on what is your budget.

I, like an idiot, sold the most accurate .22 I'e ever owned. Model 64 sporter. For what you're intending to do, the 64 is more than accurate enough. Mine shot honest 1" groups at 100 yards.

Wait until a 54 action comes along well worth the wait I have a 1907 the action is great and the trigger is better than the 64 action.

Just my $.02 worth. I have been a 22 RF afficianado most of my life.
It sounds as if your use would be fulfilled by one of the Annie's with a 64 action and put the best piece of glass on it that you can afford.

super premium scopes aren't necessary, esp. for a squirrel rifle. Many Anschutz fans put very modest glass on their rifles, i.e. Leupold VX2, Weaver V series, etc. and such optics are more than good enough.

I say hold out for the 54. :)

I didn't say one word about a "super premium" scope........however, your rifle, any rifle, will shoot no better than the glass thats on it.....54 action or not! For his use, ammo choice would be a damn good place to invest some of those extra dollars. Granted, the 54 action is superior in most all ways to the 64, but for his uses, just a lot of money spent for no gain! :)

Agreed. IMO: If you can't hit a squirrel with a 64, a 54 won't improve the situation. But to each his own and I hope this thread doesn't turn into a flame party.

Go to Rimfirecentral, the Anschutz forum and check out the Anschutz Models Sticky as it has great info.....
