Hello. I'm new to Accurate Shooter, and am getting into BR Competition.

My question is this. I would like to ask those of you who are experienced in BR, "What is it that you know now, but wished you had known when you first started competitive shooting."

I look forward to your insight. Thanks.

That wind flags are as important or maybe more so, than any other piece of equipment you can buy to improve your shooting. There is virtually no such thing as a no wind condition. Even if there was, I prefer a light, honest wind. Equipment and tune are important, but only if they shoot within the conditions. The only way to know the condition...is flags. So don't waste time, money and components even trying to tune without flags. In summary...every single shot you fire without flags is a total waste.

We all have our own wandering paths to the competition bench, but I wish I had gone to a full custom rifle sooner. I went through 3 factory and semi-custom rifles thinking I was the limiting factor. It’s not true. I was a way better shot than any of those rifles and from the first shot, my first custom rifle told me so. A full custom rifle built by an accomplished gunsmith gets you to the truth sooner and changes how you approach the task of becoming a better shooter for the better. After the rifle, definitely wind flags. Even if it’s surveyors tape on a stick of rebar you poke in the ground, you’ll progress faster.

Very sound advice. I couldn't agree more. Thanks.

Thanks, Evan. My custom BR Rifle was ordered a few days ago. Today I purchased a Nightforce 15-55x52 to go with it.

Develope a process to tune your rifle. Lots of rifles on the line are not tuned properly. The purpose of a tuner is not to tune your rifle but is an easy way to keep it in tune. Of course Flag, Flags, Flags. Never shoot your rifle, NEVER, without flags unless it is a match they don't allow them. You have a mentor, listen to him if you trust him, tune most of the others out.Use common sense. You can't clean your barrel in 10 min after the match. Bench manners are important. Not a lot of talk about them because there is nothing to sell you. Pay attention to those who are regularly near the top. Have fun.

What Benchrest Discipline are you building for?

There is Short Range Group, Short Range Score, and Long Range, both 600 yardsand 1000 yards.

The fact that you ordered a 15x55 NF compels me to ask this.

In my area which is northern Minnesota, (I live off grid)the only matches we have are long range. I will be in the 600 yard to 1000 yard with a light heavy 17lbs or less.

My biggest mistake when I first started Benchrest back in the Mid 1990’s was not buying a custom action from day one to build a rifle.

As for your needs right now at longer ranges, I would build a no neck turn .272 neck 6BRA with a .103 throat.

If you have any questions about shooting rest, let me know I might be able to help.

What ranges do you shoot at now ?

I am going with the 6BR
The 6BR will be great for 600yds and in, further out, there are better options. I shoot a 6 Dasher, the mentioned 6 BRA is another good one for 1000yd BR......

I suggest getting your own reamer and a set of custom dies to match.....You will be glad you did. Alpha makes good Reamer/Brass/Die combos for the calibers you are looking at.

Regards
Rick

Spend wisely. It is going to be expensive. A proven used gun is cheaper than having a new unproven gun.

Don’t fall into the trap that you need the most expensive reloading tools to be successful. A cheap Partner press can make ammo as good as a $1000 soup de jour press. The die does all the important work anyway. I would be inclined to spend more money a good custom die that plays nice with my chamber than I would on a press.

Not all custom bullets are created equal. I immediately became a better shooter when I moved from Brand X to Brand Y. Keep your options open and do not be hard headed the way I was. I wasted a lot of time and resources trying to make bad bullets shoot good.
