Hello from new member

I've been a long time lurker and decided to join in to the site. I'm a groundhog hunter from Pa. and also enjoy just shooting in general. I have some questions I'm sure you folks can help me out with. I'm a retired chemist, so I might be able to answer some chemical questions if they arise. My computer and typing skills suck so bear with me ( I hope this first post turns out OK).

So I'll just say hello for now and get the questions posted up and I'm sure I'll get some good info.

Chris

Wow I did it, the post turned out OK, I'm om my way to becoming a computer guru ha-ha. These computers hate me and I hate 'em back.

Welcome Chris! We’ll answer any question you throw at us. Having a chemist on board is a big plus for us! We need a powder expert and we need cleaning advice.
You could make a million here if you can come up with a solvent that dissolves hard carbon without harming stainless steel.;)

Another example of great minds thinking alike! Exactly what I was telling my grandson Sunday as we watched football together.

I doubt the black stuff in our barrels is pure carbon, there are probably other things in it that could only be determined by an in depth chemical analysis.

But that's neither here nor there, that stuff is real hard to remove. I don't think there are any chemicals that will actually "dissolve" carbon and put it into solution.

I think you have to remove it physically with brushes or abrasives. I've had some luck using PB blaster on a brush and going to town on the barrel. I believe it works better than Kroil to get carbon out. I've read here, that CLR works, but I've not tried it I'm scared. Probably should get some and try it on an old barrel and let it in contact with some 416 SS and see what happens. The proof's in the pudding.

You're correct, that if you came up with something that dissolved carbon you could make a fortune.

How does one put the quote up on a reply like nmKid did with joshb's post?

RETIRED CHEMIST , come on guy, find the solution to the carbon thing and let us in on it. Wait, you may already know it and want us to suffer. WELCOME to the best place to be.

Forget carbon- thats easy. Figure out how to remove copper.

Seems easier to remove copper than carbon to me. Sweets and wipeout/patchout work OK. I'm sure there are others that work on copper as well.
You can always take some store bought ammonium hydroxide and add a little hydrogen peroxide, that really gets after the copper.
