Hello from MN.....brrr

Well, I have been a member since 3/15/2013 and while I have looked around...I have not been active on here. I am 73, retired, live in Annandale, MN and have decided it was time for me to try some precision paper punching. I am not looking to shoot over 300 yards and mostly 100yards...so....while I do have some decent rifles...none are Benchrest quality. I have saved some money and was thinking of 6mm BR Norma. I know there are MANY other great alternatives. but this is what I want. I reload (have since 1960) am NOT an expert but have loaded 1000s of different rounds over the almost 60 years of first starting. Now comes the REAL question....What RIFLE? I have a budget for the rifle (only) $1500.(FIRM)... I was looking at Savage 12 Benchrest......found new one for ~1200. OPINIONS and advice welcome.....Thanks

Congratulations on making your first post! Regrets that I have no personal experience with Savage rifles. Many forum members do, and they likely will provide their input in response to your question...

Hello Sir,

I believe I can relate to your post as it appears you and I have much in common other than my choosing to move to TX thirty+ years ago from IA. Don't like the cold and snow.
I recently purchased the rifle of which you speak and am now in the midst of tweaking it a bit and learning what it likes and doesn't like. If you care to visit my website at mikesreloadingbench.com and click on the "Armory Clubhouse" button you can read about what I have discovered about the rifle so far. As of now I am pretty happy with what I have but it did require some examination and tinkering up front. It pretty much bugholes at 100 and I have distressed some 2moa steel targets at 900. Unfortunately the range I shoot at does not allow anyone to go down range so no paper targets unfortunately. I have to rely on target movement and the tell-tale sound of impact (maybe) to confirm that I at least hit what I was aiming at.

I believe you would be happy with your purchase. Just don't put a bore scope in it 'cause it will scare you, but hey, it shoots and that what counts. Good luck to you Sir.

Mike

Can you buy a savage in 6.5br? Id go with the 6br myself. Simple to load for and easy to shoot. Info is endless. Having never even heard of a 6.5br i think that may be a huge handicap for you.

Mike...I went ahead and ordered one....I will look at your Clubhouse...hopefully I will not have to 'tinker' too much with mine :)

Hello zr1Gary! Nice to hear you chiming in! I think your choice is a good one. I have a few wildcats but the 6br is at the top of my favorites list. There was a good write up about the Savage 6br in the bulletin, a few years ago. You can use the search function to find it. They said it was a good shooter.
I’ll give you another thought to ponder. You could rebarrel one of your existing guns. If you have a .473 (308) bolt face short actioned gun, you could save some money. Getting a new custom barrel spun up would only cost you about $600, including the barrel blank.

I see you already ordered one, but I would have suggested you check out the quality used benchrest rifles available at 'the shooters corner'. There are many great deals on used benchrest rifles for VERY reasonable prices that would most likely be exactly what your looking for.

There are no other alternatives, you must have a 6 Norma!!!!

Savage has the F class version shoots good as well as the LRPV . Their Benchrest model with the sloped rear buttstock I don't believe comes in 6 Norma. OR- check out Bob White at shooters Corner for a ready to go piece!

I like your 'used on here' idea....thanks.

I’m up east of Fargo. Haven’t seen cold like this since I lived in Fairbanks AK. Looking at -60F wind chill tomorrow
