Heavy bullets for a 12 twist 6mm BR?

Is it worth buying some 100 gr bullets for a 12 twist barrel? I expect it to shoot 70 - 75 grain bullets, but have heard that this cartridge has for some reason, been able to handle heavier bullets than normal in the slower twist barrels. The heaviest bullets I have are 85 gr Barnes solids (the yellow ones). I will try some of them since I already have them, but hesitate to buy 100 - 105 grainers.

Thanks, Tom

Under most atmospheric conditins, a 1:12" 6MM barrel will limit your options to FB bullets of about 0.920" long, or shorter - for the most part, this equates to bulets of about 80 Gr. and less. RG

Good information. Nothing like experience to sort things out. I'll try the 85's, but no expectations. The 70 gr MKHP is a very good bullet with excellent velocity anyway.

I don't have any of the CCI 450's that appear to be the preferred primer, but will try Rem 7 1/2's and Fed 205M's with Varget powder.

I got a set of the $50 Redding dies from Midway. They look good and have the small depriming pin. Once I get this thing bedded into a stock, I'll be ready to go.

Thanks again, Tom

I have 2-6mmBR's that have the 1-12" twist. I have tried bullets heavier than 75 grain bullets, but my accuracy was greatly affected by them. I have learned that I should not go any heavier than 70 grain bullets with my rifles. I am not a speed freak either, so I do keep my loads down some. I dont think that many people shoot the 1-12 inch barrels anymore. I bought these because I got a good deal on them. They just happen to be a 1-12" twist. The best bullet that I have used for woodchuck hunting has been a Barnes 58 grain VLC. I bought them at a gunshop that was going out of business, and dont know much about them. They are a hollowpoint, and have a blue coat to them. I have shot many woodchucks with them and most the time the bullet does not even exit the animal. I mean I have walked up to the chuck, and cant even find a hole in it whatsoever! I was totally amazed by this. Would like to find more about them.Maybe I will put a post in here..LOL..Good shootin...

some people DO....still buy 12 twist barrels. It depends on what you intend to shoot. If you were to shoot only below 200 yards in competition, then a 14 twist would be best and shoot 68 grain flat based bullets.
I may want to occationally shoot out past 300 yards so I have a 12 twist barrel to enable up to 80g flat based bullets. It is not true that one should simply get a fast (eg 1:8 twist ) barrel so they can shoot any bullet. Acuracy will suffer at shorter distances for the fast/ heavier bullets.
But even with the 12 twist barrel a 68g bullet is still the most accurate below 200 yards (faster bullet means less air time and less wind effect for example)
