Heavy .50 bmg build ?s

Purchased a 36" long .50 cal barrel 2" straight. Trying to find a bat model ex 2.5" action. How much barrel can I hang off that action? Would a straight taper be beneficial? Im trying to keep it as long and heavy as possible. Plan on using an xlr chassis. New to the custom rifle world and was told this was the place to ask questions bc of the vast knowledge of members on here. Thanks in advance.

I have a Lothar Walther 36" 50cal barrel that is 1.75" straight on an custom AR upper. If I was building a precision 50bmg it would be with a barrel block set up like some of the heavy guns.
I use to be a member of the 50cal shooting association. Those guys were dedicated to the 50bmg precision guns and loading for them. They might be a little more helpful.

Theres a in depth 50 cal member forum some where I found once. You gotta pay alittle to be a member, but they share knowledge, data, techniques, reloading "hook up" prices on supplys to shoot good stuff cheaper. Had a lot of perks.

Youd have to find it though I cant remember the webpage. Founded while researvhing 50 bmg real hard because I thought about building one once.

This is NOT the right place to inquire about .50 cal (assuming you mean .50 BMG or variants of .50 BMG). You want the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association (FCSA) - Members Only Forum - http://fcsa.org/members/ You need to be a member to access that forum. FCSA membership is quite reasonable - http://www.fcsa.org/cart/index.php?..._id=28&zenid=af6f90d79a31acd1fc4dde5948bd570a

I'm an FCSA member and have two .50 cal variants in build. Pleased e-mail me if I can be of assistance - webmaster@elr-resources.com - before you invest in a BAT EX 2.5".

I have 2 rifles on the BAT EX25 action - PM me & I'll be happy to correspond. And Yes the FCSA is a great place to get info on the .50 BMG rifles & cartridge.

I have a 50 cal reamer if you are interested. It was used on one chamber and one clean-up on a chamber. It was made by Clymer and is Ti nitride coated.

Actually I’m leaning towards the .510 Allen mag and going to shorten the barrel and do a straight taper on it. With the Allen mag I’ll get the speed I’m after without needing extra barrel length. I’ve finally joined fcsa but still waiting on membership card to get on forums and find an action without a 6 month wait.

K sending:
1. You need to check with XLR about whether their Evolution BMG chassis will accept a 2.0" straight cylinder barrel. The issue is the attach hardware for a bipod or bench rest plate - interior protrusion. You will probably turn up with a tapered or stepped barrel.
2. The .510 Allen Magnum is a proprietary cartridge - meaning Kirby needs to build you the rifle and any time you want to get another barrel in that chambering you need to go back to him. He does not sell reamers or reamer drawings. Last I heard his build queue is over two YEARS. E-mail him and be patient for a response (e-mail is a low priority).
3. The EX 2.5, quite frankly, buys you nothing over the EX 2.0 - unless you are into extra weight to no particular advantage. Every so often Bruno has a 2.0 in stock - briefly. I'd check them daily - in the interim place your order thru Bruno or Bullet Central (about, as you noted, a 6 month lead time - vs a year or more direct to BAT). BTW, the XLR forearm tube for the EX 2.5 is NOT any larger in OD/ID than for the EX 2.0 inlet.

I thought the 510 would need to be built by Kirby himself but a smith I spoke with assured me he could get any reamer I wanted. Thanks. Is the 50 bmg improved a better option?

Come over to the forum,, ELR and many other fun folks are always willing to discuss 50 variants.

Ah...I think the smith you spoke with was either unaware of what APS considers "proprietary" (including that he is the ONLY person to build them) or was just blowing smoke. Since the 510 Allen Magnum is built off the .50 BMG case, it is a ".50 BMG Improved". Several people have "improved" that cartridge for personal use or for limited use by friends and customers but none that I'm familiar with that went further to "commercialize" it. Neither PTG nor JGS lists a ".50 BMG Improved" reamer."

no, wasnt barrett. you had to pay a membersip to get in the group im talking about... wasnt a normal forum forum type deal..

Like this one ? I am not sure, but I think the $20 associate member might get you access, just no VHP magazine or voting privileges. Otherwise, The $55 yearly gets you everything.
Karen is busy having a life as well as running the membership process, but she'll usually get back to you in a day or two.

I hope your planning on spending a big pile of cash, nothing about these big guns comes cheap. - Ben there & done that a few times already.
JGS does have a 40 degree shoulder version that is basically an Ackey Improved where "standard" 50 bmg brass can be fire-formed in the improved chamber. - I have a 30 degree shoulder version where "standard" 50 bmg brass can be fire-formed. - If your looking at buying both a chambering reamer & a re-size reamer & bushing set& possibly a throating reamer & a GO gauge you'll be looking at close to 800 bucks in the tooling. - Then you'll need die blanks for reloading. - I'd think long & hard (do your home-work) before you choose the gunsmith. - There are some out there that claim they can build these guns & they end up spending over a year to get the job done. - I'd be 100% sure that if your going to have someone chamber 2" dia. barrels that they have a lathe that the headstock will accommodate barrels that big. - Most gunsmiths max-out at 1.500 for chambering through the head-stock.

Good Luck !!50 bmg Imp(a).jpg 50 bmg Imp(b).jpg 50 bmg Imp(c).jpg
