Heavier FP on 700 SA?

Do any of you have any experience with heavier firing pins on a Remington 700 short action? If you do, what were the results?

With a standard pin, 24lb is about right. Lighter pins (fluted etc) may need a heavier pin to make up lighter strike.

I had a buddy with a panda bring 4 different springs and shot groups with each one to just to see what worked best with his load/tune

I have experience with a lighter pin in a Remington type bolt, but not a heavier one. I have found that a smaller pin tip takes less spring, and I am wondering if, for bench applications where lock time is not an issue, if by adding FP weight spring weight could be reduced, reducing the tendency to disturb the rifle in the bags. If this would work, combining the advantage of small pin tip with a heavier pin, might take us into lighter springs than we have used before. My thought on a way to do this is that the back of a cocking piece could be opened up and a LA pin drilled for use on a SA. With the longer pin hanging out past the cocking piece and shroud, some additional weight could be tested, and if that showed promise, weight added to the back of the pin.

Jackie S posted a picture not long of one of his with a weight bolted to the back of the cocking piece.

A lighter pin will produce greater energy at the tip. A heavier pin will reduce energy but increase momentum. More momentum with a lighter spring has some benefits. Less cocking effort, less load on the sear, maybe greater consistency. Greater lock time is not a real issue from the bench. I'll admit that, having invested in the "quicker is better" philosophy for fifty-some years, it's a little hard for me to embrace totally. On the other hand, guys with more recent experience than I are likely to know better. WH
