Hearing Protection For Prairie Doggin?

What kind of hearing protection do you guys use? The last couple of years I have been using the soft foam type inserts but was wanting to go with some type that allows for normal conversations. I have some Peltor tac 6's but the head clamp gives me a headache after a couple hours, bumps the stock while shooting and you can't wear a hat with them! Anyone tried the baffle style in the ear like Surefire or Radians? We usually shoot all day for two days.

I have used the reusable plugs and the normal foam one. I never use the reusable ones any more. I feel better with the foam. It is easy to take them out and put them back in. The reusable plugs with the baffles hurt my ears when used for longer periods of time.

I use the blue baffled pugs on the red cord (Silencio). I find if you wet the baffles before you insert them they work better and are more comfortable to wear for longer durations.

Stay with the High NPRR rated foam plugs. I have the Peltor Tac 7s but use them very seldom anymore. The 32-34NPRR rated foams are better and more comfortable. It's all about the Ears. I get the custom molded thru work and they are only 27-29 NPRR rated and I'll only use them (for shooting )with the Tac 7s. If you want to carryon a conversation stop shooting. The barrels need to cool anyhow and run wet patches thru'em.

I use the Tac 7's all day for 5 straight days w/o any problems, of course with breaks through out the day. Tis nice though to take them off at the end of the day.

I have some inexpensive Howard Leight muffs that suppress noise quite well and are fairly comfortable. I can actually hear better with them on because they amplify low db noises. However, they do bump into the stock if you have a low mounted scope. I like the foam plugs bettter but they start to bug me after a while. I will switch between the muffs and the foam plugs, depending on which gun I'm using at the time.

Al, Their nice but for me I don't get as good of a stock weld, plus their HOT in the summer :o ;D not to mention the headache of an all day shooting fest ;D.........BTW the money was sent.

You cannot be over protected. According to my audiologist, shot shock waves/noise travels through the outer portion of the ear if its not covered by a muff, and also through a slighly open mouth as you are cheeking your stock. I now use plugs in conjunction w/muffs when shooting anything including rimfires. The sad thing is I learned this many years to late. Do you want to look cool, and be comfortable, or do you want to be deaf for the rest of your life. Your hearing is yours, but you can only loose it once.
One final thought, If you use a high winding 0-Turn mower, wear the best hearing protection you can get. This type of noise is very hard on your ears. Larry in western ky.

Thanks Roger,

Granted , they can be a little warm.

As far as a cheek weld, that's why all prairie dog guns of mine have Leupold super high rings, which lets you have a more upright posture. Probably why I don't have a stock bumping problem either. 99% of my shooting is off the bench, also.

A lot of trapshooters use custom formed foam plugs. Some of them will use an insert that allows you hear and shuts off at the sound of shot like electronic muffs. Some others will have headphones molded in at the time and listen to an ipod or other music device. I don't know what the noise rating on these custom jobbies are but you might want to look in that direction. Jason

Custom formed for me

I shot trap for a few years and got the custom molded ones. They inject the rubber (or silicone maybe?) into your ear and you need to sit still until it is setup. I don't know specific ratings but they block the noise a lot better than the foam earplugs you roll up and stuff into your ear. They are comfortable since they are formed to your ear, Nobody else can wear them.

I hunt w/ Action Ear (electronic muff) has a nylon band over top of head and spring behind neck. thesr work good with a cap on. used them for about 10 yr.
