hearing protection for kids

My 7 and 10 year olds had a chance to hunt this weekend. My 7 year old shot his .410 once, and
10 year old shot his 20 ga. twice. Both kids complained of ringing--did not shoot near each other, and were shooting at game. They both shoot rifles at deer once or twice a year and never complain.
I ruined my ears with a shotgun and dont want to do this to my kids. What kind of electronic earmuffs are kid friendly?? They will need to be able to hear me give commands, and hear each other, dogs running, etc. I have never considered that occasional shots while hunting were a problem until now. The damage is cumulative, so I think they need electronic muffs.
thanks for any suggestions marc

Can't tell you which muffs would be kid friendly, but remember… 140dB is the threshold for pain The 410 and 20 gauge are sounding off at 150dB and 160dB.

Edit: as little as one shot can cause severe hearing loss.

I use plugs and ear muffs at the same time when I do highpower competition, don't have a problem with hearing match commands and I'm in my 30s. I went with the the highest dB reduction ear muffs I could afford to lose, they have a better rating than most electrical ones.

We use plugs and muffs when we practice, but I have to take muffs off to hear because im so deaf. Are those muffs the electronic ones??

Here's Norm!

As a lot of you know, I am no friend of Muffs.

But, the Etymotic GSP-15 series of active hearing protection come with ear tips for small ears,as do some of the competition.

A happy coincidence, the analog amplifier in the GSP-15 series maintains normal situational awareness, which means sound localization is not hampered by a digital processor.

I make my nephew use these when we shoot. He is 7 now and they do fit a little awkward but wont take long for him to grow into them.

My GF is hard of hearing or just doesnt listen, but we wear these deer hunting so i can tell her distance and where to hold and such before she shoots. You can turn them up all the way and hear squirrels munching on an acorn 100 yards away... But they do muffle when you shoot.

If im shooting alot ill wear ear plugs and the ear muffs turned on so you can still hear well but double ear pro when you shoot. Works great.
I even carry the ear muffs in my truck all the time and use them to check a suppressed rifle zero. Never can be too careful.
