Health insurance for Gunsmiths

Hino895

Getting ready to retire at 62.
I have my class 7 license and going to move it to Kentucky when I move there.
Not eligible for Medicare so needing insurance till then.
Any recommendations for coverage from license holders or store owners?
Thanks Clinton

Cobra is available but at almost 1800.00 a month.
I’m looking for a reasonable alternative even for catastrophic coverage.

I’m retired and on Medicare. My Medicare premiums, supplemental medical insurance and prescription coverage still cost me out of pocket in excess of $1000 per month for my wife and I and is increasing at the rate of 20% per year.

I think you will find that after retirement your medical coverage will be your largest monthly expense. Well, except for primers and powder.

$1000 a month in powder and primers alone? Now that’s a retirement plan!

As others have stated, the price of care could be very substantial.

Prior to Obamacare, I was paying $325/mo for a good plan with Blue Shield.
After the passage of Obamacare, the price rose dramatically each year, so that I was paying $1530/mo right before I qualified for Medicare in 2021. I am now paying about $500/mo for Medicare plus private supplement plans.

Check with your states -- in many states there are plans, such as Covered CA, that can significantly lower costs for people with modest incomes. Here are two links for Kentucky:

Starting October 1, 2021, Kentucky residents will no longer enroll in coverage through HealthCare.gov. Instead, they'll use Kynect.ky.gov. Enroll for 2022 as soon as November 1, 2021.

It looks like you might qualify for a sponsored Affordable Care Act plan in Kentucky.

Thank God for Obamacare.

Obamacare has been good for some people with pre-existing conditions. At least in California (where I live) it has reduced medical costs for a small section of the population. However, I saw my coverage costs per month increase 473% since the start of Obamacare, while my deductibles doubled and per-visit out of pocket tripled.

Thank goodness I'm on Medicare now. In 2019, under CA Obamacare (i.e. Covered California) I personally spent $23,000 on Medical plus Dental insurance, out-of-pocket share, Rx, and deductibles, and that was with no major surgeries or interventions. That year under Obamacare I paid over $400 out-of-pocket for a neck MRI.
