Headspacing question

Hi all,

I have a mauser 98 action I am rebarrelling with a long chambered Lothar-Walther tube.

I have a friend doing the machining for me. The barrel threads have been chased to 55deg whitworth and it mates perfectly with the action.

Now, the bolt closes on the 'no go' gauge, so am I correct in assuming that I am well outside the range of acceptable headspace as it also closes on the 'go' gauge? If this is the case, I would therefore need to face of both torque shoulders until the bolt no longer closes on the 'no go' but does on the 'go'. Does that sound like correct logic??

Thanks

Yes, that is correct.
You can use a depth micrometer to take measurements from the front of the receiver to the boltface and compare that to measurements from the back of the headspace gage to the shoulder on the barrel.
Until you do some measuring, you do not know how much material has to be removed from any of the surfaces.

Thanks mate...I did the job today. Had to take off 0.011" off both shoulders in total before it was clear of the NO GO but closing on the GO. This was the first time I've re-barreled a rifle myself, not withstanding assistance from an engineering family friend who has never worked on firearms before)so I'm pretty chuffed. It is surprising how easy it is to do
