HEADS UP,UNCLE SAM WANTS TO KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR MAIL!!

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Last week I mailed 2 package's to 2 different people. They had bullets in the small box and I sealed them so you could store them in your pond.LOL Now for the sad part.I got a call 4 hours after I mailed out the bullets, the message said that my packages were packed wrong. After some questions from this so called mail inspector ,something was real wrong. She finally got to the point "what is in the boxes",My retort was it was no one's business.Wrong answer. I finally told her that they were indeed bullets. I asked how they figured there was a problem,I said did you xray them? No answer more vagueness yet. She just wanted to open them at all cost.I told her to go ahead, but I would hold her responsible if something came up missing.Wrong answer.4 hours later she called me back and said I did an excellent job packing and then she let me know that she was calling from the federal building. She was BATF. My conclusion is just be nice and put up with it,and declare what you are shipping to your local post office so as not to scare some one into thinking something is wrong with your package. This little event scared the heck out of me and I dont want to go through it again. Good luck to the rest of you.

people ship bullets in the mail all the time. Now loaded ammo is another subject all together, however they shouldn't give you any problems when shipping just bullets. I have done it many times with no trouble what so ever. I am willing to bet that there was something else that caused them to check the package. Just my 2 cents.

So you think they were asking your permission to open the packages? I would think they could just open them and any other package they wanted to. I wonder if they were fishing with calling you to see how you acted.

This isn't too hard to figure out. As a re-loader you use smokeless powder. When handling bullets, primers, cases and powder you pick up residue and cross contaminate these components. The package of bullets no doubt passed through a detector at some Post Office package facility and triggered an alarm. Possible bomb. They reacted to this.

It's my understanding that just by using the US Mail you are granting permission to inspect it. I think Andys' explaination sounds about right.

This tin foil hat stuff reminds me of a particular gun forum where this sort of thing runs rampant, I'll just call it 'Thine Elevated Street.org' to avoid any direct forum bashing. Nevertheless . . .
;D

I was told if it is excessively packaged or has more than a certain amount of stamps on it they want to talk to you.

You are on a roll this morning :D

Now I am on a roll 15 tango,it really frightened me and my fiance. You can bet that it was the new girl at the counter who didnt know me.I went today and the regular guy was there and he couldnt tell me who did it but I can figure it out easily enough.I have never been questioned before that day,I have been in business for many years and I do not break laws or do anything weird or strange.I am a lawabiding citizen that just wanted to warn people so they could avoid what I went through. Snake you bet they were, the postal inspector told me with the way things are today they are gonna be way more cautious. I dont like anyone going in a roundabout way of calling me a liar.

I'm not sure who you think was calling you a liar. It wasn't me. I have no doubt what you say your experience was is in fact true.

Try the UPS store next time.

jonbearman,
I was goofing off with 15Tango, I had followed a couple of his posts this morning and it looked like he was having fun on the forum so I joined in. Wasn't poking any fun @ you just stole your thread to goof off a little, (sorry about that) I infact don't like anybody getting into my business especially the goverment! I would have reacted the same as you, probably much worse. When the anger wore off and my brain kicked back in,it would scare me too. In this country if you don't wear a towel on your head or you speak English your GUILTY untill proven innocent. Again I don't take your incident lightly and I feel sorry for anyone who gets treated like a criminal when just trying to carry out his legal Law abiding day.
Wayne.

there isnt a ups store within 25 miles of where I live.Maybe I should move out west where real men get up in the morning to go shooting instead of going to starbucks and reading the washington post.LOL

I had worked in the propelant industry and visitors after 9-11 were concerned about nitrogen compounds being on their body or laptops when traveling home. Nitrogen compounds are supose to be fairly easy to sniff for. A package that has been in a reloading area may be contaminated for sniffers to detect.

By the way UPS is anti-gun. They have broken two rifle stocks, one on the rifle comming back from Winchester. A locale gun shop will only ship guns in hard gun cases with an outer wrap because of past experiences.
