hey thanks alot that really helps, lol, now i just have to be carefull when taking the bolt apart. i am sure i can google that and get an exploded view to help. i talked to a smith that said he would not install just any old barrel for me even if i provided the barrel, so this way now i know it is possible for me to do myself.

thanks,
J

If your careful, you actually don't need to disassemble the bolt. Hardest thing is that there is a definite 'feel' to the job. Suggestions of screwing the barrel hard up on the Go guage wont work as the bolt wont turn to open when there's friction from the hard screwing onto the headspace guage. It's a light touch of the Go guage that's required and that is a feel you develop with experience. The job requires 3 hands ... so I'd suggest an action vice, a benchmounted vice to clamp the action vice into and a nut wrench is all that's required. Having a Go and No-Go guage is also worthwhile. Place the action vice over the receiver near the barrel or you'll twist the action. Over-tighten the action vice and the barrel won't unscrew out once the nut is loosened, if a stainless barrel use an anti-seize compound when you re-assemble but its worthwhile on every swap job.
Some gunsmiths wont touch a job when they know you'll be barrel swapping ... because if you re-assemble a barrel chambered and threaded by Gunsmith Bob and do it incorrectly and get hurt ... whose name is associated with the barrel?
Cheers...

Here is a video from Bergara Barrel on how to do it.

Here is 4D Reamer's site. They sell ready to fit barrels in in any of the reamers that they have and they rent Go & No-go gages. Can't get any cheaper. Only thing else that you will need is a barrel vice and a barrel nut wrench.

Bergara-Er Shaw-Mcgowen sell ready to fit barrels. If you buy from someone other than 4D you could still rent the gages from them.

Disassembling a Savage bolt is a pretty simple process and if you are going to be changing your own bbls it makes sense to know how to work on the rest of the action. Removing the ejector is also easy and for target shooting you may want to leave it out so you aren't throwing your brass off the bench. I also take the bolt apart when I am setting my sizing die so I can feel how the bolt closes on the brass when bumping the shoulder .001 or .002.
