Head space ?

I'm changing the barrel on my Savage mdl 16 in 260 Remington. The new barrel is on and the bolt with the ejector removed will close on the go gauge but wont close on it with a piece of .003" shipping tape added to the gauge. Am I okay?

Thanks, Justin

The rifle is back up and running. The bolt will close on the go gauge, but won't close with a piece of .003" tape on the gauge. It will close on the gauge with a piece of .002" tape but it takes some effort and crushes the tape. The fired brass out of the new barrel are .001" longer at the shoulder than the fired brass out of the old barrel.

Thanks for all the help.
Justin

Yer good.

I never use no-go gauges. Only masking tape that's 0.0035" thick. Works like a charm and by not having any no-go gauges there is no chance in getting one confused for a go-gauge.

With the Savage barrel nuts, when I tighten them down they reduce the HS. So once the barrel hits the go-gauge, I back it out a hair to make up for the HS shrinking when tightening the nut.

I found the opposite with my barrel installs, tightening the nut ever so slightly open up the headspace clearance. Tightening the nut pulls the barrel away from the bolt face.

That is the way I did mine and have not any trouble. Let us know how it shoots.

Logically speaking, that's what I would expect to happen, but unfortunately the several barrels I replaced on 4 different Savage actions had the opposite happen. I think this might be due to me putting the Receiver in the vice and not the barrel.

Are you certain the barrel didn't thread slightly further into the receiver as you tightened the nut? That would certainly explain it.

That's probably what happened.
Next time I change a barrel I'll put the barrel in the vice instead of the receiver and see if it changes things.
