Head sets

I bought a set of Peltor Tactical 7S (MT1H7A) that I bought about 10 years ago lol. I love them. They are full size set of headphones, which some people dont like. Even with my fat head, I dont have any trouble getting into position to shoot. But I also turn my head a little. I actually just picked up a second set that are like brand new. Great backup. The microphones and audio in them I think is excellent. Better than the Walker razors that I keep to loan out.

I also picked up a ~$50 set of Walker razor's. They are slimmer and not quite as good at muffling, but good enough. But they are my loaners.

Anybody have a set they like?

Yes sir, I have the 3M Peltor "tactical/sport" model. I like them for a couple reasons, the sound quality is very high. They sound just like you are not wearing/amplifying anything, perfect crystal clear stereo sound. Of course they turn off as soon as a gun is fired. They come with both blaze orange colored safety covers and black ones too that snap on and off very easily. They are not hard on batteries and I definitely suggest you spend the money and get the silicone replacement rings to go on them. They are worth their weight in gold for the extra comfort, especially if you spend any amount of time wearing them. I use mine as a hearing aid when hunting as well as at the range. I will say that on me they do interfere some with a high cheek piece. They also offer a bluetooth capable model that lets you listen to music, etc. or talk to your hunting buddies with the right comm gear. Best of luck.

I have the Peltor and Walkers also.I agree with the other assessments. For the money the Peltor is the best of the two. But if you just need for occasional use the Walker`s should work just fine. Walker`s are available on Amazon if you use that venue. You can try and return if not right for you. Happy Monday muleman ,hope this helps. Jeff

I looked these up and having a hard time finding the ones you have? Are they $200?

The $200.00 ones were the set that had the built in comms capability. When I google them it takes me to Optics Planet. OP is saying that they have been discontinued by Peltor. I haven't had them but a couple years, but it dies appear they are no longer available, well, at least not from Peltor or their dealers. I will have a look around and see if I can find someone with a new pair. I think I paid a little over $100.00 for them and I cannot remember what the silicone soft gel rings were. Sorry about that, I had no clue they were done so soon!!!

Yep, there are some still available...try googling "3M Peltor sport tactical 97451" for the muffs and "camelback gel sealing rings HY80" for the rings. Looks like about $120.00 to $140 for the muffs and somewhere around $40.00 for the soft gel rings. It's a lot of money for ear muffs, but you will not regret these. The new "sport tactical" is about $100.00 and doesn't come with the orange safety covers. Not really a big deal, but I haven't used the newer ones so I don't know how they sound.

What are the sealing rings for? Thanks

Sorry, I should have done a better job of explaining those. The sealing rings are very soft gel filled rings that fit on the muffs and are the part that goes around your ear. This is what you feel against your head when you wear the muffs. It comes with nice ones, but they are no where near as soft and comfortable as these. They also make a better seal against your head to better keep out noise. Again, there is nothing wrong with the ones that come with the muffs, but the gel ones are just way more comfortable. I find ear muffs kind of aggravating to wear, especially for any length of time. You barely know you are wearing these. They also stay very soft in the cold if you hunt with them so they are comfortable then too. One thing I should point out, although they are very clear sharp stereo sound you will notice that when you talk your voice wont sound quite as good as the folks talking around you. Not sure why, I guess because you are the one generating the noise internal to your own head, if that makes any sense. I say this because if you get these and you are the only person around and talk to see how they work you will want to shoot me. You really have to gauge the sound quality by listening to someone else or something like a cd player, etc.

Edit: they have a volume setting too, you can turn them up to hear better or attenuate them down so you don't hear every leave hit the ground.

Great info thank you. I hear you on the comfort of the rings, as a gunner in Nam I had these on for hours upon hours and talk about cauliflower ears it was horrible.

You'll like the peltors over some of the cheaper ones then. They dont squeeze your head as much. At least in the couple of others I've tried. I really really like my peltors

I have been using a set of Ryobi Tek4's the past three years or so. Still on the original battery. I can run my shop equipment and dial down the sound to barely hear my chop or skil saws operating. Mine cost me less than $75, with tax.
