HBN coating

i think rubbing alcohol has too much water....look for something higher in %...(less water)
but i have no answer to your issue...

The directions for the Tubb coating system doesn't mention using any bb's only bullets and hbn in the jar. Do the BB's really make that much difference?

No. With moly and ws2 bbs are beneficial. I've never used them with hbn and get great results without.

If as someone posted your getting bullets gummed up with hbn there's two possible reasons. The first and most likely is using exorbitantly too much. Common mistake. The second may be allowing moisture to creep into your hbn supply.
Remove those two scenarios and you'll get great results without media.

i've made somes test recently with the 215 in a 308 win. I've made myself a pressure table with naked bullet with 5 different powders. Found max load and run each load in Magneto speed chrony. I've then HBN coated my bullets and came back with the same load untill max pressure. Absolutely no changes in speed and max load between naked and coated bullets ??!!

I've coated bullet by starting to clean then (dish soap), tumbler with steel BB for a couple hours (2-3) until they are white and shoot !! I really dont understand what i'm doing wrong but there must be something...

Are you polishing that white excess off the bullets?

The one trait with hbn I've noticed that never saw with moly or ws2 is any excess creates a roughness. Ie it seems to not molecularly lay flat as rapidly as other dry lubes.

yes, I place them in a towel and slightly remove exceeding HBN. when placing bullets in the tumblers, are you removing the media ?

I use no media, just bullets and hbn. I do use a vibratory bowl as opposed to a tumbler though. I suppose that could make a big difference in methods.

I put my bullets in a vitamin bottle. Then the bottle gets wedged in a small empty bowl on my vibratory tumbler. So the "vibrations" go directly to the bullets. About two hours of vibrating.

I hbn everything except lead.

Stainless ball bearings. 1/2 pound of 1/8 and 1/2 pound of 1/16.

Harbor Freight tumbler.

Colander over a bucket as a separator.

Dumped on muslin in a tray.

Polished in a cotton sock.

Wear gloves so you don't contaminate your freshly coated bullets.

Wear gloves when seating for the same reason.

My experience with HBN and 6 ppc , New Krieger barrel , coated barrel before the 1 st shot , used HBN coated bullets from the start , used HBN every time i cleaned the barrel , two wet patches at end let dry , then run 1 dry patch though.
barrel has 1034 rds thought it , took it to a gun smith in NY state and he bore scoped it , never told him before about HBN , He thought barrel was almost new with hardly any rounds , no fire cracking , no carbon , rifling was sharp and shiny , transition from case to throat was still sharp no carbon or wear , gave him second barrel to check 856 rounds though it , non coated barrel and bullets used , throat erosion, some rifling erosion/ cracks out for 2-3 inches and some carbon in different places to muzzle , said barrel was now a varmint barrel , then told him how many rounds on 1st barrel and he could not believe it , he is now going to try HBN . Does help shoot any better , not sure , does it clean easy , oh yea , this barrel still shoots little holes if i do my part , and going to use it to start this year , does it save money for me , yes , sorry for the long reply.

As we are bringing this one back to life ill jump in. I have a barrel with exactly 500 rounds down the tube now of which 330 was with molly and the last 170 was HBN when I switched to new brass.

My first outing I had some weird flyer with strange readings on my LabRadar that I initially blamed on the virgin brass but after a bit of inspection it appeared that the HBN was "grabbing" the clean necks and leaving lite scratch marks which was screwing with my bullet seating so I started using Lyman dry lube to coat the necks before I seated the bullets.

I tumble the bullets in ceramic media for about 2 hours and than polish them lightly in a sock so that you just barely see a HBN "shimmer" on the bullets, I think this is one of the important parts of HBN and that unless you get the coating that is left on the bullet the same every time you CAN struggle with constancy.

Before I shoot them I clean my barrel with alcohol to remove any trace of oil and then coat the barrel with HBN and 93% (or something there about) alcohol mix, after 30 minutes ill run a dry bore mop down the barrel to get any access HBN out and make sure the chamber is clean.

I ran a string this weekend out of a clean/prepped barrel, first shot was 3033fps and the next 7 shots stayed at 3090fps and 3088fps.
After letting the barrel cool I shot 2x5 shot groups at 660y that was very small in some crappy wind conditions running the same speed .

For now Im happy with HBN

Where are you'll finding small amounts , like 2 -3 # of non plated or S S shot ? The people that sell to shot shell reloaders want to much personal data just to get S&H charges on 10# of shot.

I use normal shot for a bb gun , i put it in my vibrating tumbler for a few hours to take coating off , then wash them , let then dry , then put a small amount of HBN in then tumble my bullets , for bullets i wash them , warm them up in oven , then tumble for 3 hours , then clean them in a sock, seems to help barrel life and cleaning from my experience in the above post.

I just took a few steel goose or duck loads and pried the tips open to get my BB's.
