HazMat Charge

Just ordered from Powder Valley and the hazmat charge is up to $27.50. Is that the modus operandi all over?

Well with everything else rising price wise I guess this is no surprise...thank god some of the places around here still sell at reasonable prices, not all but some.

Brunos is charging the same HazMat fee of $27.50. Sounds like it went up around the 1st of the year.

The only defense is going to be to order with two or three friends. Watch for a sale .......buy together and put it on the shelf !

yea. everytime i need a pound of powder it costs 400.00. have to make it worth while. no primer hoarding here. just cant shoot fast enough.

powder valley is giving me a 3% credit card fee also.

That's news to me. Have been buying from Powder Valley for a long time and have not been charged an additional amount for using a credit card.

its listed on the invoice as DEALER CREDIT CARD SERVICE CHARGE. However some items are discounted and some are not. I am not complaining its still the best deal in town.

your lucky it was only $9. some places charge $12-14 for VERY SMALL ITEMS!

how do you think they pay the employees???

hazmat - haven't checked, but, does UPS & FEDEX & DHL all charge the same fee???

habu

Hazmet fee's are not set by the shipper. It is a Gov't charge for the shipping of Hazardous (sp) materials. I believe that is correct......

Some of the companys only charge a $20.00 HazMet fee I always assumed ( you know what happens when you do that!) that they absorbed the $5.00.

Just brought a large powder order from Powder Valley and no credit card charge, there is insurance, hazmat, and freight only and the amounts were reasonable for what I was buying.

Besides the sustained rise in gas prices, youguys bitching about higher hazmat and shipping charges...enjoy the effects of de-regulation!... 8)

The way they were printing money it's just a mater of time. may be we will be using the doller to wipe with to save the cost of t.p. :o

the hazmat fee kinda gets me. I don't see why gun powder has a hasmat fee. does it cause cancer or some kind of birth defects, in a unwell ventilated area with prolonged and continuous exposer, possible. I find it hard to believe that a ups, fedex truck doesn't have enough ventilation. does it spontaneously combust, nope. If there is enough heat to ignite gun powder in a ups truck you already have a bigger problem than the gun powder.

another thing, we all store it in our houses, garages and so on, if it is was dangerous enough we wouldn't be allowed to store in a building that is lived in and no one would want to. once again if your house is on fire the gun powder is going to be the least of your worries.

just wanted to add to my last post. Midway usa does not charge a hazmat fee for loaded ammunition it still has gunpowder in it why is it different than buying a can of powder. please help me understand.

Guy's, It's a Gov't thing. You will go nuts trying to figure out why the do this and not that. Gun Powder is "classified: by the Gov't as a class A explosive. Thus the Haz Met fee.

Here is another thing that shows just how stupid they can be. Black Powder is also classified as a Class A Explosive. For A store to sell Black Powder they are only allowed to keep like 1 lb on the shelf. The rest must be kept in a secure Bunker that meets the Gov't standered as a powder magizine. This is the reason it is getting so hard to find anyone that sells Black Powder. They all seem to be able to sell the substitutes as they don't fall under the same regulation. Yet I purchase 3 or 4 cases of Swiss Black Powder a year mail order, I pay the exact same $25.00 hazmet fee per 25 lbs and UPS delivers it to my door.

Like I said you cannot figure the Gov't out. I just quite even trying to make sense of anything they do......

I think you should have a read of this:

http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/publications/download/SAAMI_ITEM_200-Smokeless_Powder.pdf

It's about DOT keeping the lid on shipping stuff that can and has caused damage during transport, making sure it is safely contained/packaged so that in the event of an accident there would be no "extra" problems.

As far as having it in your house, that is covered by the National Fire Code and many State/City Fire Codes and the National Insurance Underwritters.......you are only allowed so much, just like having a dangerous dog, very bad!

Same rules apply to lots of things that get transported over the roadways....like Freon, I had to keep a log of every oz. that was in my service vans, in stores and the shop, not just for the EPA, but the DOT as well.
