A tool that new guys shouldn't over look

I thought I would post this for someone that is fairly new to the game as myself. I have been shooting and reloading for many years. Even so I have became serious about things in the last 2yrs. I invested into a Hawkeye bore scope and it arrived today. I have been looking into my bores with it this afternoon. It is amazing what you can learn about your barrel in a matter of min. How well your cleaning, how well your rifling, throat, grooves and chamber are. If you want to see why the hand lapped custom barrels shoot so much better than a factory barrel well just look into the bore with the Hawkeye bore scope. I'm glad to say that I have been doing a good job cleaning my barrels. Truth be told I was unaware of how well I was cleaning them untill now. There are many uses for the borescope other than checking for fouling. The Hawkeye may seem like it's just too expenisve at first when looking looking at them in a catalog or on the net. I can promise you it's not that much when you consider the knowlege gain from being able to examin your bores. It will pay for itself in no time. If anyone is going to get serious about their shooting, then it would be a good idea to put a Hawkeye bore scope at the top of your list of tools to invest in! You want be disappointed!
Thanks
Mark

Another tip for the borescope and its associated cost is to go in with a good friend and split the cost. You will not need the scope every day anyway. Always agree with the friend that if either wants out of the deal, they can make an offer to take or pay to get out. Worked for me!

As Mark said you can learn a lot from looking inside the barrel.

Mark,

Which one/size did you get? I got to look thru one at my barrel a couple of weeks ago and I too, had an eye opening.

Klong,

Good advice! Now to find a rich friend... ;D

It's one of the best investments I've made. It cuts through all the BS, is valuable for staying on top of your cleaning regimen, throat erosion, etc. Great for checking the condition of a used rifle.

After looking thru my gunsmiths Hawkeye and seeing it in use, this may be something I need to invest in. I totally agree that it cuts thru all the BS and gives a true pic of your barrel's health. Any independent vendors selling them, or is this something only Hawkeye is selling?

40xguy: I bought both of mine, (over a 4 year period, gave the first one to my son) from Lester Bruno. Both times he beat others prices by about $40. They offer a $75 rebate that seems to always be in effect. Both of mine were the 17" Deluxe with the hard case. Some find the 90 degree angled eyepiece to be worth the extra $250, I had one, sold it, and continue to use the straight eyepiece. ;)

Thank you Frank, I will keep Bruno in mind, I am gonna talk my shooting partner into possibly splitting the price on one of these. After seeing it in use, it is hard to say no to buying one of these.
