Have You Degaussed Your Barrels?

I know that this is a 4-1-15 post, but magnetism in machined parts , especially parts in a turning lathe, is a problem sometimes. Chips will start sticking to tools, etc. I could see some manufacturer doing this after gun drilling and or cut rifling , not for accuracy, but to prevent sticking chips.

Interesting technology but I'm not going to use it. Many times while hunting snipes, I've become lost. I simply hang my rifle from a string and let it point toward north, like a compass. One time I made the mistake of going hunting with a stainless rifle barrel...

I worked in machine shops for the better part of my life and whenever anything made of steel was ground, polished etc it induced magnetism and we simply ran it across a demag unit that doesnt cost a whole lot and no more magnetism. This machine is not necessary to demag a barrel even if it were true that the barrel makers were actually going to buy and use one. I know this was an april fools joke but a demag this big would certainly be too much money to buy to accomplish a simple demag.

I just noticed this post...in fact, i have been busy using the powder kernal uniformer advertised several years ago. Just finished my first pound of powder and looked up to see this...

I knew it was an April Fool thing when you said Kreiger used cryo.

?? Krieger does cryo-treat their barrels. Watch the Krieger video, from 0:20 to 0:32 here:

Krieger used to double cryo their barrels, till they were taken to court, which ruled the 2nd cryo infringed on the patent, so now they only do it once, AFAIK....

You might check with them.

I believe Butch, But who holds a double cryo patent on barrels? I find that interesting, if you cryo three times would it make a difference? Lol

Good point Ray. I'm pretty sure Kreiger has discontinued Cryo as an every day thing. I believe they think of it like 5R rifling.

Well I just did check with them.....they still cryo the steel before machining.

I personally think they machine better after cryo, but I maintain that is the only advantage.
Glad they are still doing it.

Here's interesting news from Germany. Vallon GmbH, maker of industrial de-magnetizing equipment, has revealed that two Wisconsin-based barrel makers have acquired large degaussing machines. These German-made assembly-line degaussers can process up to 50 rifle barrels at one time.

Krieger has successfully used cryogenics to improve barrel steel. Degaussing may be the next big advancement in barrel making.

Read full story here: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/04/gun-tech-top-barrel-makers-adopt-degaussing-technology/

Here is the Vallon GmBh degausser:

Degaussing — the process of de-magnetizing metal objects. Degaussing is now used in many industries to uniform metallic products and to prevent unwanted interactions with magnetic fields.

Haha April fools, SS is not a ferrous metal.
