Have an empty powder container and nothing else to do for about 10 minutes?

This happened to me yesterday afternoon and this is what I came up with.

Cut the bottom and top off, opened a small "window" at the bottom to see if I was getting low and now there's no question as to what powder I have in the reservoir. Don't have to leave a bottle next to it to remind me.

Also, although I live in the PNW where Sun is a rare commodity, the black plastic bottle material does shield the powder from what little sun we have.

Works great with Hodgdon's family of powders, not so much with others that use square bottles >:(

Now all i have to do is go find some empty 1# bottles for the powder(s) I buy in 8# jugs. This one was left from my recent test of CFE223. Tuesday my order will arrive with it in 8# jugs.

amlevin what are your thoughts or opinions on CFE223 performance and claimed attributes? thanks,rhoward

I started a thread earlier on my results. Simple summary, it does what they say and I can get good accuracy from it with a 168 gr bullet in my .308. Ran a load development test starting at 46.8 gr and ran all the way to just short of max. Absolutely no pressure signs in my rifle which is a stock barreled Reminton 5R Milspec. Best accuracy for me was at 48.1 gr of CFE223 with a Nosler Custom Competition HPBT, Wolf Primer, and Winchester brass, OAL of 2.820. A nice tight center group with .104" vertical. Horizontal was a little wider, just over 3/4" with pretty good wind. Speed was 2737 fps with a MAD of 4 fps.

Was primarily interested in it so I could have one main powder for my hungry little .223's yet still be able to use it in my .308 rounds I'd like to load on my Dillon progressive. The powder meters as good as it gets. As a bonus, the copper fouling characteristics are pretty much what Hodgdon promised. OK, the bore looks a little sooty but it comes out easy. A good soak for a short while with Hoppe's, one patch to clear the "mud" out and one more to make the bore clean enough to shoot again. The 4th patch showed almost no carbon and absolutely no copper fouling. Even running a soaked patch with Sweet's couldn't coax any "blue/green" from the bore.

I'm planning on shooting a lot of it and have 32 more pounds due Tuesday.

Amlevin,now that is just the imfo I was hoping to see as I have a .223 and a .308 remmy vs that will copper some after 40 or 50 rounds.Thanks for the feedback and I hope to try it soon.

I do something similar when using 1 lbers.
Dump the powder in the hopper. Screw the cap back on the 1lb jug and invert it on top the hopper instead of using the green cover.
Like you say, I always know what powders in there but theres no cutting involved.

Update on copper fouling;

Yesterday I cleaned my rifle after 50 rounds using the CFE223. Decided to use Sweets so i could see if there was any copper left. Of all the cleaners I have used this will tell me if there is any copper in the bore with the clear blue/green color. Same as before, a soak only this time with Sweets followed by patches. First patch was black, almost like it was covered with old drain oil. Second patch, a little black left. Third patch clean. None had any color so apparently there was no copper fouling.

Again, it seems to live up to it's hype.
