Lately I've been musing over the popularity of .30 caliber cartridges. From military to wildcat, there appear to be many that share the common case base dimension.
With this in mind, one end of all these cartridges will fit the bolt face and use the same extractor. On the other end they could use the same bullet. Only difference is in the "middle" with different case lengths and profiles.
Has there ever been a successful "multi caliber" rifle built using the same barrel but with chamber inserts that unlike the chamber adapter for .308/30-06 doesn't just shorten the chamber? Perhaps something similar to removable choke tube in a shotgun.
Just interested if it's ever been done, using adapters, not just barrel changes.
