Has this ever been attempted? Or even produced?

Lately I've been musing over the popularity of .30 caliber cartridges. From military to wildcat, there appear to be many that share the common case base dimension.

With this in mind, one end of all these cartridges will fit the bolt face and use the same extractor. On the other end they could use the same bullet. Only difference is in the "middle" with different case lengths and profiles.

Has there ever been a successful "multi caliber" rifle built using the same barrel but with chamber inserts that unlike the chamber adapter for .308/30-06 doesn't just shorten the chamber? Perhaps something similar to removable choke tube in a shotgun.

Just interested if it's ever been done, using adapters, not just barrel changes.

There are adapters made for shooting rimfire ammo out of center fire cartridges as well as shotgun reducing inserts to shoot smaller gauges in larger framed guns. The AR15 22lr adapter works almost exactly like you are saying using an insert. I have also seen inserts for really old black powder firearms to shoot RF in them but these are all low pressure examples. I remember an article a long time back in a reloading magazine about really old cartridges being made from brass that took a smaller cartridge as well. Like adapting the cartridge instead of the chamber.

hi
there a gerrman or swiss company that make rilfes with chamber seperate form the barrel the idea is the to repalce the barrel, there only the thraot to cut , the name of company i just can not rember

If memory serves me, I think that E.B. Brown used to market something like that. An insert that slipped into the chamber.

So I don't know if these are out there but I did think about it a bit. Seems you want to use the same bolt and bullet diameter and only change the case size. I don't think you could shorten the case length or the insert would have to have rifling that matches perfectly into the barrel or be a large jump of some sort. With the case head remaining the same for the bolt, how much smaller could you make the case and still shoot the same bullet? Thinking about it, I don't think there would be enough benefit for the trouble.

What would you do if it could be done?
