Has Remington discontinued 221 Remington Fireball Brass?

My 20 Vartarg is chambered for using Lapua 221 Fireball with the larger .235 neck. I have 384 unfired rounds of Remington 221 fireball brass that I can't use. The brass has been sold.

Why not you will have about .006 of clearence. Theres alot of factory chambers that have that much. It will probably shoot just fine, anneal your brass and you will be good. It will work the necks a little more.

That is good to know. I had to size the necks to .226 for the bullets to seat. .230 works with Lapua. I did anneal about 100 of them but haven't loaded them yet. I suppose we'll wear out the brass sooner?

You might consider posting the Rem brass in the classifieds, here and on Saubier.com. There are plenty of Vartargs out there with smaller chambers designed around that brass.

Not if you anneal. You sizing die neck diameter is also important. It all adds to the work imparted to the brass and hardening that occurs.

Another option for 221FB brass for forming is from Nosler. I was up there the other day and there's a very good inventory of it, but the price is so close to Lapua that I usually spring for Lapua in the end, but it's good to have another option.

I've used R-P, Lapua and Nosler in my 20VT; all have worked well, but there's always less work (prep) with Lapua. And strangely, the very smallest group I've ever shot with ANY rifle in any caliber, was with my 20VT shooting.......formed and annealed R-P brass. Go figure.

I was having issues with "fired" Remington .221 Fireball brass. Making it into 20 VT, the necks would be "all over the place". New formed into the VT was pretty even except the necks were a little thick. Didn't want to get too involved in neck turning so I just ordered up a custom 20 VT reamer with a .234 neck. Problem solved.
