Hart #4 actions over 15 inches long?

Could these actions be cut down. I thought I read somewhere there was an old Stolle action that was really long that some would cut down. Why were these actions made so long. Was it extra bedding/glueing material to grab hold of.

I looked up a few posts regarding the Hart number 4 action and didn't get much back on it but were these good actions in they're time are they still a good Benchrest/Varmint action. Thanks for any help or replies and I apologize if I didn't do the right search.

Very Respectfully

The action itself is about 7 1/2" long, the front extension makes
it 15" total. My Hart #4 only has mounting holes at the front of
the action and additional mounting holes on the extension for
scope mounting. I have not weight the action alone but I read
that it's about 8 lbs. by itself. Quite a hunk of metal.

The Stolle action to which you refer, does exist - it is the Stolle Polar.
It is a similar length to the Hart #4, but is largely aluminium, so weighs about half that of the Hart #4.
There was a theory at one time that the huge bedding surface area contributed to stability.
I have 2 Polars, you could cut them down to a more practical size but it would seem sacrilegious to do that.

Cheers.

the Hart's are very much in business and R.W. Hart is the part of the family that make the actions. call the number above and they can fill you in on any questions you may have.

I have a shilen action thats over 2" dia and id guess 15" long. Stolle made a teddy as well that was like a bat mb. All they are is a panda with a shroud over the barrel. Very solid actions for cruisers back in the day. The teddy was a dandy hv model

My Hart #4 action came with 3 bolts for 222/ppc/br faces, all with extra long bolt
handles. The stock has a 5" fore end with steel runners and the gun weighs in at
24 lbs. without a scope. I hope to use it against the unlimited rail guns next year
at the first 2 gun AR state shoot.
