Hardness of the front bag

I've read Speedy's article before about verticle, and read it again today. He talks about too hard of a front rest. I'm struggling with exactly what that means. I have two Protector bags for my front rest; one leather and the other cordura. One is stuffed full of sand and is quite hard. The other is loosely filled with sand, but when put on the rest feels just as hard as the other bag. Am I using the wrong kind of sand to fill my bags?

I Googled speedy front bag sand.

I'll send you my bill in the morning. ;)

The Edgewood front bag in my Farley rest is relatively soft and filled with crushed walnut shells. The top walls and side tensioners trap the bag without the need for excessive firmness. The rear Edgewood Minigater bag is filled with zircon sand to almost full with the ears a little pliable. When I push the stock down into them, the ears get fairly firm. It seems to work for me but I do not shoot point-blank BR.

Interesting....The first article that I wrote for publication was based on the idea that if you are not going to compete, you should look in the rule books for things that are illegal, because if they are addressed there, they probably are considered an unfair advantage. Of course, if you are not competing, all you need to consider is what works the best for you. I only have one competition rifle. I will have to try this with the others.
