Hard Bolt Close 783 Rem

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I'm working on a new 783 Rem for my son-in-law. The bolt closes exceptionally hard. I removed the firing pin assembly which did not help. The problem is being caused by the extractor. It takes brute force to push the case head past the extractor. I'm not sure why this is or what I can do about it. I don't want to experiment with the spring as if I ruin it, I probably can't get a new one. Remington only sells parts to certified gunsmiths. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, how did you correct it? Thanks!

No problem like that . Is it in the correct direction . Is the bevel cut on it ?
I like these and have a few , modified even more . Cane you send pics , email ? If so , ggmac5@ aol.com .
Have you removed the extractor to chech the spring and it hole . Take it apart in a zip lock bag . No chance of flying pieces .

Thanks. I'll take pictures and email them. Everything looks kosher but it takes tremendous force to close the bolt. I had one of these for a very short time and sold it to a friend. I'm positive that it did not close this hard. It seems like the spring is too stiff or the bevel isn't cut correctly.

Sent you a picture Gary. I see now that the bevel does not align properly with the bevel on the bolt head. Instead of the cartridge case head pushing against the bevel, it is pushing directly against the flat portion of the extractor. It takes an act of God to get the bolt closed. Do you know where I can buy an extractor? It is too close to hunting season for sending the part to Remington. Last resort is try to cut the bevel back more with the Dremel.

Seems like the store you bought it from would swap you for a good one.

Bud's Guns internet deal. Haven't asked but I doubt if they would. I'm going to call Remington Monday. If nothing else I'll just have to rework this extractor.

I see. There has been some good deals on 783s in my area.

Take the extractor out and see if it's still hard to close. It may or may not be the problem.

I did that. It is the problem and I can clearly see why. You can't force the case head past the extractor when it is sitting on the flat instead of a bevel. The extractor is machined incorrectly. I should have noticed it sooner!

Pretty much the same thing I ran into with my oldest grandson's new Ruger American in 223. It wouldn't lock to battery on my Go gauge or virgin stick of brass, but would without the extractor.
It had two issues. One, like yours the rim of a case or gauge hit the flat portion of the extractor, two the extractor coil spring was stiff enough it could have been used in the front suspension of a '59 Cadillac. :D
I re-contoured the extractor so a case would hit it's beveled portion and made a new spring out of .025 wire. Those 'minor' alterations fixed it.

Called Remington today. They won't sell me an extractor. I was told to send the bolt in for repair. I asked if a gunsmith could purchase it. He replied that yes he could, have him call parts. The gunsmith called. Got a text from him saying that Remington would get back to him. I don't know what that is all about yet. I used to like Remington

Talked to my gunsmith today and the fellow at Remington never got back to him. Lucky for me, he had written the persons name down. I was unable to speak with that person, perhaps thankfully, and talked with another gent that has restored my faith in Remington. Long story short, the extractor is on the way. It is NOT a "restricted" part. Being sent right to my door and--- the fellow who talked to my gunsmith yesterday is in a little hot water with his boss. The gent that I spoke with today is a gunsmith himself. He knows the ropes. It was a refreshing change from two others employed there! :)
