Harbor Freight Ultrasonic cleaner

These cleaners seem to be popular with reloaders. I was going to purchase one at the Birmingham Harbor Freight but, they were sold out of the larger one. Thats the bad news- the good news is that they were sold out because its on sale for $59.99 instead of $79.99 and they are getting more in. If you get the American Rifleman magazine, there's a 20% off coupon almost every month bringing the price down to $48.00. Seems like a good time to get one. Here is a link to the cleaner. You can mail order it for the same price but, I think the NRA coupon is only good in the store.

Shows in stock for me. ??? I plan on getting it at the store anyway to be able to use the coupon. The store says they will have more next week and I got a raincheck just in case.

navyrad8r,

Great post! I'm sure a lot of folks can get some use from that one and I won't have to cut up my American Rifleman anymore.

you do not have to cut out the coupon. take the magazine to the store and they will scan and give you the mark down, lestways they did for me.

Fyi, I have been abusing one of these since I got it from the wife for my birthday back in Feb. It aint the fastest one in the world, but it does the job. I keep two glasses in the tank, fill them with some vinegar/dishsoap/water solution and then anywhere from 12-20 pcs of 308 per glass then run them for as many 480 second cycles as it takes to get the pockets clean (if the insides get clean, great, but if not, I dont worry about them, I just focus on when the pockets are spotless). First 3 or so cycles are on heat, the rest are not. Then a couple cycles with baking soda to neutralize the vinegar then a cycle or three with tap/well water. Then rinse and then I toss mine in the tumbler with treated corn cob for a while to get them nice and shiney. Done.

There are nights that the ultrasonic runs almost nonstop with the only off times when I dont walk by frequently enough to keep it going on the 480 sec cycles. Seems to be holding up just fine.

Is it possible that having the brass inside of a glass container slows the process? Maybe by attenuating the ultrasonic energy that reaches the cases? Have you tried it without the glasses?

I am waiting on Harbor Freight to restock that item at the local store and trying to learn the best procedure for when I finally get one.

Yes, thats why I run it with the glasses in there. Beakers are better, as they the glass is thinner, but I am fresh out of those. :-) I have run the unit with about 100 pcs of brass in there, stacked up like cord wood and it work, but SLOW. Just too much stuff in there to slow down the process.

I did a batch of 40 last night, 20 308 cases in each glass, and they were done by the time I crashed for the night. I would just restart the machine every time I walked by it. Not sure how many cycles it ran, but they came out clean when done. Much quicker than running the big batch I tried over the weekend.

hey brother you are famous!!! you made the front page!! :D ;D :o

Or maybe infamous...
The article seems to have been pulled which as far as I can tell, is unusual. Wonder what happened?

I am considering buying an ultrasonic cleaner. For those of you that have them, does it completely replace tumbling in cleaning media? If I got one, could I get rid of my 20 year old RCBS vibrator cleaner?

Thanks!

Dave

Yes if your not doing large lots of say praire dog varmint brass. Small lots of target brass it is GREAT for. Would take too long and alot cleaner to do say 1000 22-250 brass.

I will second the l & r. You guys need to look at one these real ultrasonic cleaners. Also, have had good luck with the Hornady case cleaner concentrate. Use this then wash with distilled water. Wow the cases look like new inside and out.

I just picked up a HF ultrasonic cleaner and it seems to work pretty well. I have a question,

Is it necessary to use the distilled water as the final rinse, it seems to me that the BS wash passivates the acid in the vinegar and the regular water would wash the BS away?

I imagine the distilled water would reduce the spots from the normal water, but I can live with spots and I am not using any of the commercial case cleaners so my brass is not shiny so the spots probably won't show.

Thanks
