On second thought, I'll just bow out of this thread.

I don't think it's a good idea to demonize people who are here, following the rules, essentially calling them moochers. I prefer models that let people choose if/when they want to contribute and not guilt people in to doing it. That happens a lot around here. Offer me something that makes me want to contribute, and when I don't, try and figure out why I haven't. Find something to offer to further entice. Maybe there needs to be something more than classified posting access? Maybe there needs to be discount codes with vendors? Who knows...

$50 - People who sell more than they buy
$100 - People who cause hate and discontent

I looked at a few non paying members info............you know, the guys that have been here a long time with few or no posts and are learning. I have no problem with that. They are gleaning info. That is great. But, I am not going to support the ones that give absolutely no support to this site that have thousands of posts, many in a couple of years...... you know the ones that know everything but that don't support the site.

Someone saying that I am demonizing them rijndael, is a word that the left uses.

I've got plenty of friends, don't need anymore, so I don't really care what anyone thinks about me...never will...

If it were my website everyone gets 30 60 or 90 days to kick the tires but at the end of the trial period upgrade or lose access. No access to the classifieds without the upgrade.
Annual renewal.

It's been proven over and over here and other forums that most won't financially support something they're getting for free.

Couple more thoughts.

I'm thinking we need to find a way to make what we have [forums, articles, classifieds] sustainable - which simply means enough cash to hire/contract the necessary support staff. Trying to find something new to offer that could be 'monetized' to provide the needed cash indicates what we've got is not sustainable and that we have to add yet more work to make the forums, articles and classifieds sustainable.

I also think the forums and articles should remain free - they are certainly what brought me here. And, I think most peoples' expectation is that information is 'free'. If a 'paywall' is put up around the forums, I think it would reduce the attractiveness a lot.

On the other hand, it's quite customary to charge for a service like classifieds. Since the agreement for current gold and silver members included 1 year unlimited ads, this should continue. For other members, we could start charging for access to classifieds, perhaps with pricing options on the number of allowed classifieds. For example, 1 posting is $10; 3 postings is $20.

At some future point, after a reasonable notification period, Gold and Silver could be asked to pay for classified listings over some number but at a significant discount to the price for non paying members.

The "classifieds section" is providing a very valuable service. No doubt about that. Most people expect to pay for a service. Period. Somehow it needs to be monetized without creating more work for the boss! Shaming people into contributions is not the way to do it. You receive a service, you pay a little. Most people understand the concept and understand that this site is a business and needs to be profitable to continue. If not, we will loose our favorite site. Something none of us want to see happen.

If the website went to a flat $25 annual access fee I'm pretty sure the 3% already supporting would stay. Nothing lost there.

Then if you picked up even 10% of the non supporters @ $25 that's a pretty big improvement for the guy putting in the work and paying the bills.

I'm sure some people will be lost, hopefully the folks I have on ignore and the folks who seem to be here only to argue and start drama.

I hear a lot of creative ideas that keep the non supporters from paying and cause the boss more work at the same time.
Seems counter productive to me but I'm sure I don't understand it LOL

Listed in order of metals most difficult to deal with in the shooting sports, and the only reason I suggest a minimum $10 membership to sell in the classifieds is I think anyone that wants it all for free should think about how hard it would be for them to start their own forum and do it for free to anyone that wants to visit!
