Handload for a 308 Win & 20' Barrel

Does anyone have any good data for a 308 Win out of a 20" Barrel?

I'm using Lapua brass and 175 gr HPBT and 210M primers and OAL of 2.8". I have not had much luck w/ N150 or N550. I would like to get out to 600 Yards w/ this particular rifle. Any suggestions as to other powders or primers that others have had success with would be appreciated.

Varget. Somewhere between 44 and 46 grains of it, probably around 45. Good stout load, works well in a fair number of .308's.

Varget and IMR 4064 have shot nicely in my 20".
4064 gives a bit more velocity which will be to your advantage at 600.
I was getting around 2550 with 4064 and 2485 with Varget.

F210M / Lapua case / 44.5 RL-15 / 155 Scenar / 2925fps -- I've shot this load in 110 degree heat and had no signs of pressure.
F210M / Lapua case / 43.5 RL-15 / 175 SMK / around 2700fps

I shoot these from a 22" Mike Rock barrel and will easily make it out to 1000 yds. With a 20" barrel I would look into the 155 Scenar. It's easier to get them up to speed out of a shorter tube.

Everyone, thank you for the suggestions.

SF340Driver, I think that I'll give RL15 the next try. After I made the post I realized that I was a little unclear as to barrel length. The exposed length of the barrel is 20". I believe the threads for a REM 700 is 1 1/16" so the total length of my barrel is 21 1/16". I am encouraged to hear that 1000Yds is realistic w/ a 22".

Hi,

here my 20 inch loads :

Lapua Scenar 155 gr, 46,5 gr. Varget, Win.brass, CCI BR2, average 2683 fps

Hornady A-Max 168 gr, 41,6 Accurate 2230, Lapua brass, CCI BR2, average 2624 fps

id try 42 grains of Re 15 with Winchester cases with a 168 grain Sierra Matchking. I shot my new remington xr100 in a .308 and got less than half inch groups at a hundred yards every time

My M-1A has a 22-inch barrel but 44 grains N-140 with a moly-coated MatchKing 175, Winchester case and Winchester primer works really well. Groups less than 4 inches at 500 yards.

What rate of twist would you guys advise for a .308 shooting:
1) 110 to 155 grn. bullets
2) 155 up to and including 175 grn. bullets?
Thanx in advance,
Chino69

A lot of people swear by 1-12 twist barrels for bullets in the 147 to 168 range. I have a 1-10 right now that does nicely with 175s but I think it's actually too fast for them. The word amongst locals that shoot the 175 long range is that 1-11 is the way to go. I'll try one of them next. I really don't like the 155s in the 1-10.

As for the light bullets, check out the 30BR page in the left column. It's really interesting and has twist rate suggestions.

If you are shooting across-the-course, try the 175s. They're excellent and the one bullet will do it all from 200 yards to 1000.

Chino,

1) 13 or even 14 twist. I think some of the Hunter Benchrest guys might use slower than that w/ their light match bullets.

2) 10-12, probably 12. I've shot 155's out of a 1-10" no problem in the accuracy dept, and 190's out of a 12 twist. Anywhere in btwn 10 and 12 for 155-190gr... and I think the 'difference' is going to be more in between your ears than anything.

Would a 1:13 vs a 1:11 give you better velocity,in theory) assuming all else equal? Just curious.
