Hand tightened barrels

Talking rifles with a guide in NM and he told me they have all gone to a custom rifle built in Alabama? that the barrels are just hand tightened with a set screw. Anyone know the gunsmith? Just interested in this.

I think there was a custom action made with a wedge type mating surface w/ a split recoil lug that provides the tension after hand tightening by tightening the lug screw…or something in that nature. Don’t recall the name.

My buddy has one he bought for PRS shooting. Swaps are damn fast. Seems to shoot well. I'll get a manufacturer name later today (he likes to sleep in - a benefit of working remote, I guess.)

Looked way back on my text messages - It's a Terminus Zeus action; he put a stainless 308 barrel on it, and has since bought a couple of 6GT barrels (I think he got them from Terminus as well.)

I think we've got a forum friend or two around here who have a similar situation, probably without the set screw. jd

so your talking to your guide and he tells you all about the new rifles he and his friends are using and you don't ask for the name? or call him back and ask?

See the post by @Tucker65 .
He is on point. Barbour Creek uses Terminus actions for their builds. The Zeus offers a QC option using a set screw for the hand tight barrels. I believe the tenon specs are slightly different for screw-on options due to not being snugged up tight at the shoulder.

Seems awhile back, there was a thread that centered around a company that advocated 500ft/lbs of torque for barrel to receiver, If I remember correctly, it became quit a thread that went on for several pages.

Here's a link to a video by the owner of Terminus - Joel Russo:

If Russo has anything to do with it, it sure will work as it should...

A guide from a neighboring farm. Not my guide! He told me the name but I forgot. You must be an Alabama fan.

Berore the days of Remage and barrel nuts, I think you’re describing a switch barrel setup

Terminus Zeuss…. Lots of prefits for it. Slapped a 26” proof comp contour on my buddies and locked set screws at 10in lbs and gun is a hammer! Did all of this at the range. Lol
