Hand gun for wife??

My wife wants to get a pistol for protection. What would be a good hand gun for a girl who is scared to shoot, cause she don't like the noise or recoil. It would have to be very dependable and prolly something in .22 mag or equivalent. Anything louder or more recoil she would not shoot. If I can start her out on something small, we will work up to a gun with some more horse power.

Ruger has a new model out in 22 cal. Neat little gun, not sure of the model number but looks very "handy". Use a 22 LR with enough rounds and it will stop anyone. Shoot til there is no more rounds to fire, it wil do the job.

Self defense pistols are designed to "stop the fight NOW"... Small calibers can kill very readily, however, they almost never stop the fight NOW! If she is afraid to shoot, I would start out with a target style .22 auto.. Once she not only knows the pistol, but has become proficient with it, then move to something larger.. I would NOT buy a .380 for "noise and recoil" reasons. If she is really averse to noise and recoil, get a 9mm. If she can handle most anything after graduating from the .22, I would opt for a .40S&W.. ANYONE can handle one. The H.P.D. now limits you to just a few pistols>>ALL are 40S&W's.. In my career, I supervised well over 100 women under my command.. From tiny ladies to fairly large women.. They all had to be "good enough" to qualify. Your wife CAN do it IF she really wants to. And a 40S&W IS a "Fight-Stopper"!!

I think I would try to enroll her in an nra class for women shooters and if not available try every local gun club to see if they cater to teaching women with a female instructor. It will ease her mind to overcome her fear as she see's a 4'8" woman shooting a 45 acp with ease. Its just a thought.

My wife wanted to get her ccw licence also but was affraid of the recoil and noise also. I let her shoot my p22 and she did not like it very well. She thought it was kind of complicating to operate. I ended up getting her a 38 spl. revolver. I loaded some really mild loads for her to practice with. She loves it now. Everytime we go shoot no matter how many rounds I bring she never comes back with any unshot.

Is this to be to carry, home protection, or both?

When my wife wanted to start to carry. I told her that's great butt your going to learn how to shoot a hand gun and be very Familiar with how to work it. We bought her a ruger sr22 to start. we shot two times a week for two Months then got her a Smith & Wesson compact 9mm she loved it and is very good with it. She now has many handguns and is very Proficient with any of them. The last carry gun I got was a S&W shield it has been Flawless for 2500 rounds.

I think the new Ruger SR=22 would be a good starter pistol..Small .380 and 9mm can have as much recoil as larger calibers when using small sub compact frames...Sr-22 then move into a SR-40 compact..

Start her on a 22rf and work her up to 38 SP. The S&W 637 would be a nice platform, it's +P rated. I just bought one for my daughter (she is of smaller stature ) and she likes it alot. Price was $450 + tax

If you are stuck on a rimfire, have her handle a Ruger LCR. One down side is the accuracy. I wasn't overly impressed with the one I shot at 50ft., which doesn't mean much at a defensive distance, but can be detrimental to confidence building.

If your wife is going carry for protection. Get a revolver simple point and shoot. In a 38. Don't carry a 22 rim fire for protection. Life depends on it.

This says it all. My wife started shooting a Ruger .22 Single Six. She loves the gun. I bought her a .380 semi-auto to CC and she hated it. She carries a .38 revolver for protection. A .22 is not a wise choice for CC.

+1

Does the SR-22 come in a .22mag? She really likes that one and it fits her small hands. She is interested in CC mainly due to her job.

I wouldn't get her a handgun at all. I believe a Remington 870 20 gauge with a short barrel is the best home defense weapon for a recoil/noise adverse person. The youth model fits most women very well.

She feels pretty safe at home. We live in the country, on a gravel road, with relatives close by. A shotgun would not look good going into her work place, well to most people. That would be pretty cool a bunch of soccer moms carrying sawed off shotguns ;D ;D.

After I got my S&W Sheild the wife had to have one to. They are great little guns for carrying
