Had An Awesome Day

Well, youth deer season started friday at noon. Doublezranch (Jayson), his Father Derald, and his son Zayne, drove down from the east end of the state and we met up. Zayne got his doe at 250 yards prone from a bipod with his weatherby 7mm-08 shooting the 140 grain Barnes TTSX on friday night.

The next morning, we woke up bright and early and walked in to where we would have a good view of a field with some sunflowers. We werent there for 5 minutes and two does and a fawn came out. My little brother Colin got set up behind my 284 win, and i dialed the scope and wind. She was 560 yards out, with a 6 mph wind from 5 o clock. She turned and quartered too us, the shot rang out and she went 3 feet, straight down. :) The 162 amax hit going 2128 fps, in the neck and exited the offside shoulder with a 1 1/2" exit, with the jacket sitting nicely in it. So we gutted her and took her back to the house to debone her.

After that, we headed home to take a nap , when Jayson called us and said he found a mule deer buck for me. So we hopped in the truck and hauled rear. We got to him and saw the 3x4 standing on a rock ledge, at 519 yards in a 20 mph wind coming from 3 o'clock...... Soooo, i got set up with my 284 win :D , and got everything dialed. He was quartering to me a bit. I shot and the buck's back end dropped and he started to tumble down the hill. I wasn't pleased with the placement, but the shot was about 8" back and angled through about 10" of spine (taking out all the veins, backstraps and tenderloins ) and exited next to the butt hole. The buck was dragging itself with its front legs down the hill but eventually stop and took his last breath. He expired in about 30 seconds from when i shot him, so it was a fairly quick kill.
I am really liking the performance of these 162 amaxs.

All in all, we had a great time, and made some new life long friends, we are going to team up and knock down some goats in Wyoming in October. Im looking forward to it.

P.S. Sorry for the pics being so small.

Don't know what state you are talking about but it must be a state of bliss. Good deal.
North Dakota, its a little windy here but we deal with it.;)

Thanks for the kind words guys, we had a blast.

Now there is a trip I wish I could have taken my son on years back. How exciting it must have been for all.
