H4831sc in .260Rem

Has anyone had overwhelmingly good luck with H4831sc in a .260rem? Reason I ask is; I also reload for my father who is shooting 4831sc in a 6.5x284, and it would be nice to only have to order one powder instead of two. I have been shooting H4350 and have shot very tight groups with it, but always wanna try something else.

I can answer with an overwhelming yes! H4831sc is by far the most accurate powder in my 260 Rem. I've tried the same charge with two bullets (Hornady A-Max and Sierra MatchKing's) with the same outstanding results. It easily outshoots H4350 in my rifle.

Here are the specs:

260 Rem
Barrel: Broughton No. 7.1 contour, 21.5" 1:8 twist.

Loads:

140 gr. A-Max 46.0 gr. H4831sc: 0.210" (3 shot) avg. groups at 100m; 1.5" (3 shot) avg. groups at 600m.

140 gr. Sierra MatchKing 46.0 gr. H4831sc: 0.150" (3 shot) avg. groups at 100m; 2.5" (3 shot) avg. groups at 600m.

In both cases I am about 0.010" from the lands.

Chek out SnipersHide. Similar results have been obtained with this great powder. It is not too slow. Just too accurate!

I should have specified more... I shoot F-class, have a 30"barrel and a long throat. I shoot 600 and 1000yrds.

I use H 4831 in my 6.5x55, have found it to be extremely consistent and stable. I use it in tactical and long range matches out to our range's 900 yard limit.

I've been shooting H-4831sc in my 260 for years in 600 - 1K matches. I agree you need a long barrel, mine is 30", to get the most out of it. Been using Remington cases, Winchester LR primers and either 142 SMK's or 140 Berger VLD's. One of the most accurate rifles I own. Go for it.

Maybe I should modify my earlier posting in that if you have a longer barrel and a longer throat where you can keep the bigger bullets from being back in the case when you load them, then H4831SC may be a workable powder.

i use rl 22 which is even a bit slower althought about the same and get great results in terms of accuracy and velo is right up there with the the more typical powders perhaps a few fps off but but 10 shots in the .2-.3 range is where i am willing to sacrifice a few fps.

I got about 2750fps with 130vld. I currently use vv550 and H4350. I recently switched barrels from a broughton to a krieger and find that this new krieger is tad slower but accuracy is still there.

So far, H4831, either regular or SC, are my favorite powders for 130gr Bullets in my Browning Low Wall .260 with 24" barrel. Yeah the loads are a little compressed, but that doesn't seem to hurt a thing. I get about 2850 and great accuracy with about 47.5 or 47.8gr H4831 behind the 130gr Accubond or 129gr Hornady Interlock respectively.

So far I haven't found a 'max' load that is accurate with H4831sc but 44.1 behind 140 Nosler CC's give me 2670fps and are under .5 MOA. The real surprise (for me) was 44.7gr of H4350 behind a 129gr bonded bullet with a red tip: 2964fps with an SD of 4 from a 25" barrel.
Because my Rem 600 has a 2.8" magazine, 140's seat a little too deep to get to the higher accuracy node with H4831sc and 130 VLD's are pretty long too.

Barrel length has NO bearing on what powder to use. All the powder is consumed in the first few inches of barrel and pressures drop off well before the bullet hits the muzzle. A 28" barrel in a 260 is still going to have the same limitations.

4831 is too slow for best VELOCITIES in a 260 Rem. It may well be accurate but I couldn't get enough in the case. I wouldn't use it in a 6.5-284 either unless it had a 30" barrel and was a target rifle. Just can't get enough velocity with it in a short barrel. I like 3000 fps with the 140s and that isn't happening with a 24" barrel unless you use one of the new wonder powders.

If the lord said Wayne you can only have one type of powder for all your rifles so you must pick one it would be H-4831, I have shot that powder in 22-250 through 338-378 WBY, it may not be my powder of choice in some of them but it will accurately shoot in all of them, I actually prefer H-4350 in my 22-250 and RL-22 in my .338-.378 WBY but 4831 will work and my 6.5*284 loves it with 139 Scenars and 143SMK's I don't own a .260 rem but if I did H-4831 would probably be the first powder I would try, especially if I had a long tube.

I've had good luck with 4831SC in my 260 with 123gr bullets, getting good velocity and accuracy...but I tried 140gr A-Max and with 46.0gr I could not maintain a 2.90" COAL; the powder seemed to be pushing the bullet back out of the case.

I found that H4350 to be more accurate and have much lower ES\SD vs H4831sc, I also like that it takes 4-5 grains less powder to achieve the same speeds.

A longer barrel will normally, with this powder, yield somewhat higher velocities. For some guys that will be meaningful in reaching an accuracy node or a better harmonic range for their particular barrel. Keep in mind that some match shooters will use barrels as long as 32". Additionally, long-throated match chambers with in-the-lands seating may allow greater case capacity than is possible with mag-length seating limits in a hunting rifle.
