h4831 with 87 grain hornady bullets in 243???

You can run 38.7-44.9 of h4831. I have run it with 75 grain bullets and the 87's with great results. The max load is compressed and I would avoid that if possible.

I use the sc version of H4831 out of a 1-10" twist Sako, and 87 gr V-Max. It is the best load that I have found for this -24" factory tubed rifle. Using Lapua brass and Fed GMM 210 primers. I won't give the powder charge weight.

I have shot several hundred very consistent rounds using H4831SC with the 87gr V-max on targets. Barrel is 26" long, 10" twist. IMO those two components are definitely worth tinkering with. The attached pic shows 3 shots at 1k from prone/bipod with a 10x scope.

the data out there on H4831 and bullets on either side of 87 grains is kind of confusing.

I realize there are variables, but these sure appear to be wide... and the speer in the hodgdon book sure does not appear to be some sort of low surface contact low drag type bullet.

Wonder how to sort this out, without burning up the barrel working up loads....

the hornday book does not list it for the 87 grainers

hodgdon book lists as follows
90 grain speer, should be very similar... 45 grains to 48 grains

lyman book as follows
85 grain sierra hpbt----41.0 to 46.5 grains

90 grain sierra fmjbt----43.0 to 48.0 grains

Sierra book
90 grain fmjbt 40.7 to 45.7 grains

85 grain bullets 42.3 to 45.3 grains

Nosler.. does not list it as an option for their 85 and 90 grain bullets

I'm surprised that the other posters have had success with 4831 with bullets lighter than 100gr. I gave it a fair shot with 95s and 100s and it never grouped well for my rifles which are factory Rem.

Mildbill, try a small ladder test with that bullet & powder combination..Load just 3 rounds of each charge weight..from min to the max W the 90 grain bullet weight shown..It is close enough..Maybe forget the last two steps in the ladder test...I take a sized case [no primer or powder]with just the bullet started into the neck about half way..Use this as your max lenght dummy round using the 87Gr V-max..insert dummy into a cleaned rifle you will be using. find that dimension, max lenght to the rifling..You might need to do a few dummies to get it right..Write down the lenght of that cartridge you can just close the bolt on ...For testing I like to start just 5 thou short of the rifling..Load 3 at the min. suggested powder charge, then go up in 3/10's of a grain increments. using just 3 loaded cartridges at each RUNG in the ladder test...At 100 yds do your testing..Check each case/primer/feel of the bolt for difficult extraction...Any high pressure signs you must not continue...I try not to get the barrel super hot..& I wipe clean between each 3 round group. My target is normally a 6 pack of bullseyes pre labeled with each test load..You will be seeing how this combination of bullet/powder behaves & not using a ton of components to find out....If & when you see a sweet spot..say group 5 ..From there you can tinker with plus or minus a tenth of a grain of powder..& vary the seating depth of the bullet to fine tune things..Hope that helps..If you want me to e-mail you more info just PM me..I have some targets I have saved...Some combinations are real eye openers..The 35 whelen really amazed me using a 250 grain bullet & IMR 4064...mike in ct

I have had the best accuracy with IMR 4064 85 gr HP Sierra Game king. H380 is good and being a ball powder burns cooler and extends barrel life. I would advise using H380 and Molly bullets. You will get twice the barrel life and good accuracy. 8)

In a Cooper M22 6MM Rem H4831 and Hornady 87gr HPBT were fantastic. Despite the fact the chamber was large and eat up cases like T-Rex it shot little groups. Finally got tired of prepping brass for a funeral and had it rebarreled to 22 Cheetah MKII and happily ever after...

H4831, ya man check it out!
