H4831 vs. H4831 SC

I re-barreled one of my Savage Model 12 BR rifles to 6.5X284 awhile back. Most of the powders suited for this round are rare to extinct here. I did have an old pound of H4831 SC and was able to shoot some good groups with the 142 SMK over 51.5 grains. I just scored some H4831 LC. Read a lot here that recommended working up with the LC to see if they both shoot the same. The attached target says they are real close. The SC load is running a hair over 3000. I shot both of the groups back to back with no cool down. The LC group is approximately 3/8" higher. I will have check the speed the next time out.

I've found no difference between the short cut and the original except availability.
I guess the SC meters' easier, but then I really had no problem worth mentioning with the original versions metering characteristics either.

Barrel to barrel differences come into play also!

I remember reading years ago that was the reason Hodgdon came out with it. That is is not a problem with mine.

Clearly the H4831LC is 0.040" better.

I use both H-4831sc and regular H-4831 the same way because best accuracy ended up at the same exact charge weight with both when testing them in 243win and 300winmag.

Velocity between both was close enough I could not attribute it to just powder alone.

Powder Valley had 4831 in stock for a couple of weeks, I did not buy it because I use 4831sc. I guess I could. Thank you for your post.

I believe that Hodgdon has stated that the two are identical ballistically, and that a particular charge weight of one will produce exactly the same results as that charge weight of the other. QuickLoad would confirm this. Try each one in QL with a particular charge weight and the MV and pressures will be identical.

Forum Boss: Quickload is a great tool. But it is NOT that precise. There is typically a factor that needs to be tuned to get the most predictable result, and the German programmer who creates QuickLoad openly acknowledged that to me. You really cannot assume that the true MV and pressures will be the same. And that even goes with different lots of H4831SC.

The only problem you have to be aware of is your fill.
If your using SC and your up in the neck with an accurate
load, The original long cut may top the case off, and finding
you looking for a lower node.

one can say a lot but ACTUAL TESTING IN MY ONE RIFLE say it aint so.

Those are some horrid groups!…. In screw the barrel and send it to me I’ll get it shooting for ya haha!…. Just kidding my friend that’s nice!… in 2012 I bought a factory 6.5*284 Savage Benchrest rifle, I noticed virtually no difference in group size.

This Model 12 came in 6.5X284. Somewhere around 350 to 400 rounds it started throwing a round out of every five shot group. I opted for a 6 BR and then a 6 CM. I decided to try the 6.4X284 again with a Shilen Select Match @ 28". What a difference. This barrel likes #22 and IMR7828 also. Tried H1000 and H4350. Barrel was inconsistent with both. This is a fun round to shoot.

In my one experience with the two powders they weren't the same. In a 25-06 shooting 115 Berger VLD's the H4831 SC was almost 100 fps faster. Great accuracy and IMO easier to work with than the non SC.
