H4350 OBSESSION?

H4350 is a very flexible powder. Think about this, you can use it in everything from the 6 Dasher thru .300WSM and almost everything in between! So the competitive shooters can use it in a wide array of cartridges not to mention all the hunters who use it in their rifles! With such a wide ranging use, it's no wonder there is a shortage!

Hell i'm gonna have to give a +1 on that.

It's marketed really well for one, as are all the Hodgkin Extreme powders.

Secondly it's a good all around powder.

Is it better, on average, than IMR 4350 or IMR 4451? Nope.

While visiting Anniston Alabama and the Talladega marksmanship Park recently I stopped in at Creedmoor. They gave us a tour of the facility and we soon entered the reloading room where their 6.5 Creedmoor ammo, along with all other ammo they sell, was being manufactured. The head reloader was very open with info. I then asked the Million dollar question, "what type of powder are you using in the Creedmoor 6.5 loaded ammo" thinking he'd never tell me. Without hesitation and after he told us they had tested all of the appropriate powders in the burn rate for that caliber and after testing in different temperatures, climates, testing for ES and SD, group size, speed, covering all of the paramaters, etc., the winner was ....................Reloader 17. To answer the original question, I don't jump on the band wagon just because someone shot a good group with a certain powder. Creedmoors results were gathered using several different rifles. The ammo they produce has to work in anything chambered in that caliber because once it leaves the factory, it could go (and probably will go) into any rifle configuration.

Its my understanding hornady used to print the load on the side of the match ammo box. I heard this on the podcast. It was long before i ever shot a creedmoor . I think they said it was 40ish gr of H4350. Might have helped make it popular...

When i started loading 6 creed, H4350 seemed to be the most recommended with rl-16 a close second.

I tried H4350 in a 260Rem and didn't have good results. The thinking was, the 260 is pretty close to the 6.5Creedmoor and so it should be a good choice.
Nice thought. Reality didn't agree.

Now, it would have been fine for a hunting application. But underwhelmed punching paper.

Years back, I was testing it in my new 6.5 x 47. The results were fair to good and it seemed most folks here, at the time, were also using it. One lazy afternoon, I was reading my Berger manual and they said they got “best results” with a different powder.

It's tough when there are shortages happening the way they are. I wanted to try N555, wasn't around, is now, but, I don't really need it around just to try it, as bad as the price on powder is these days. Would have liked to try IMR4451 and RL15.5 too, but, both were only around for a minute. H4350 and RL16 & Varget have been doing what needs doing for me, have lots of both. I have 3 different burn rate classes to contend with in my guns, I've settled on a few in each, sold off 30-40lbs of stuff I'd acquired over time, over the last few yrs. I like AA ball powders for small stuff, H4350 and RL16 and Varget for medium stuff, IMR 4350, IMR & H4831, IMR4831 and RL26 for bigger.

I use n555 and 160 and some 550 get great results in my 260's

IMR 4350 >H4350
I agree, but if you compete, H4350 is more stable and that means a lot. For me it's no big deal to adjust after the first shot if I have to, or in the middle of string if needed. Kind of like adjusting for the wind. Just one more variable to deal with.
