You are the first one that I ever heard of using 4198 in a 6ppc. WD

I've heard of it, but I wouldn't go there, it's slightly too fast and too dense to be optimum.

H322, N133, LT-32, and a couple of others are all good. 322 is better in cooler weather. 133 starts acting weird in very low humidity. LT-32 seems promising, but doesn't have the track record quite yet.

Some fellas run 4198 in the real cold winter shoots but after taking a look at hodgdons online loads you are way over pressure for your bullet weight. The top load for a 70 grain bullet is 22.0 grains. Rethink what you are doing before something bad happens. Keep it safe so you don't get hurt.

My first shooting partner shot a load of 25.0g of IMR 4198 with a 68g Berger, unreal accurate in 65-75* weather, this was in the very early 80's.

For those unfamiliar with the H4198/6PPC combination, look at the label on the side of a 8 lb jug of H4198 [maybe the 1 lb too]. Hodgdon recommends 22.0 grains of H4198 as a max load for the 6PPC.

Having said that, the powder of choice used by most 6PPC shooters is VV N133. However, N133 is very temperamental, literally. Temperature changes throughout the day can wreck havoc with the load, that's why loading at the range is so prevalent with the 6PPC crowd. I use N133 in my 6PPC.

H4198 is just the opposite. It's very stable. I use it in my 30BR and once the load for the barrel is found never change it and always pre-load. I've gone to shooting my 30BR in group matches for that very reason.

As with any load, reduce max loads by 10% to start, and then work up, which can prevent in most cases flat primers and hard bolt lifts regardless of powder type.

Suggestion:
Loading at the range with a scale to check your throws. Pick a day that is as bad as it gets for heat, anywhere you plan on shooting, and do a load workup to maximum in the hottest part of the day. Then you will know where your upper limit is. I would also do this with the bullet into the rifling as far as you ever go. If you can find a load that shoots well that is below this upper limit, then you can do some experiments to see how it holds up at cooler temperatures.

All the above is very interesting and I enjoy the read. It has been a long hard winter and I am getting back to shooting, as many in the North are. With not much powder available I just grabbed some H 4198 off the shelf to fireform. It was so accurate at 25 gr that I just kept trying it until I got to 27.1 gr with no pressure signs, well except for a few pierced primers [ cci ] so I went to wolf. N 133 doesn't seem to dial in for me ! Would you see pressure before a spike and what does the spike look like?

I guess I should try another powder like LT32 or whatever I can find.

I wouldn't shoot anything that pierced primers. It's a sure sign of excess pressure. If you see extractor marks on your rims, the normal sine wave on the neck flattens out or disappears, loose primer pockets. Etc.

When the weather heats up, you'd better have a rubber mallet in your range box.

Panda- Hart, new chamber, Cases turned by Hoehn, .010 off, 3 shot group loaded in .3 charge weights from min to max, 100 yds, .002 tension, 3 flags, shot a latter at 400. I will revisit 133 when time allows.

The problem may have been your seating depth, and possibly neck tension. 133 likes more neck tension than some powders need. .003 is not too much, and it is pretty common to seat bullets somewhere into the lands. If the bullet is a single radius ogive in the 7-8 range seating so the marks are less long than wide generally works, and you will usually find one of the tuning nodes between 29 and 29 grains with bullets in the 64-68 grain range. You mentioned loading up to the max, did you determine this by bolt lift or some book listing?
