H4198 color ?

Picked up some re-packaged H4198 and when i poured it out it was black and not the typical greenish color i've been used to seeing... Is this old stock or maybe not H4198 at all? Hodgdon was closed today so will have to wait till Monday to call and see what the scoop is. Can anyone here tell me if Hodgdon ever made H4198 that was not the typical green color?

Thanks for the replies. Maybe some of the guys who have been using it since the dawn of time knows
if it was a different color back then ? Maybe in the 70's or 80's, and did they ever produce it in packaging bigger than 8lb jugs

Hodgdon would be your best source of information. I would be very careful of using a repackaged powder until I could 100% verify it’s identity.

I have been around long enough to remember the black H4198.

In fact, I had a couple of 8 pounders from around 2000 I had bought it as an alternative when I could not get 133 to shoot in my 6PPC.

When I started shooting a 30BR, I used it. Then the green colored H4198 appeared, and it was just a little slower but tuned right in. It is what I have been shooting for the past 10 years.

The grains of IMR 4198 are much larger than H4198.

I have no idea what you have, I can’t say as I have ever seen repackaged powder unless it was military pull down like the old “T” of 6PPC fame.

Maybe it came in one of these? My buddy Trevor got this last year, and he won some matches with it in a 6BR. Crazy, I know.

Some of the old stuff was black. I have both black and greenish/yellow. I was at a match in CT and there was a gentleman selling some of his deceased brother's components. There was an 8lb jug of H4198 on the table and there was a half pound missing from it. The guy wanted 50 bucks for the damn thing. Allie Euber beat me to it. He picked it up, opened the cap and looked inside, screwed the cap back on and put it back down. I said Allie don't you want it? He said no I'm looking for the black stuff so I scooped it up. You'd have to be a dang fool not to buy it for 50 bucks. When I bought all of Dave Apples stuff he had an 8lb jug of the black stuff. I chronographed it and it was 75FPS slower than the greenish/yellow stuff.

Yes I've seen it black/gray color. It was an 8lb keg and the previous one had the green tint that all the other EXTREME lines had that I had dealt with up to that time. I inquired with Hodgdon and they said it was infact H4198 EXTREME just like the green tinted powder. It seems to shoot the same.

This was several years back though but I would send them the LOT # just to be sure

h-4198 was black back in the 50s-60s but it was long cut---the new short cut is the greenish stuff we shoot today--i never had any imr-4198 but to the best of my knowledge it was long cut and black--Roger

My black and Greenish/Yellow H4198. As you can see the black stuff isn't from the 50's or 60's it's from 2013 and it's not long cut. It's the same size as the greenish/yellow stuff, and each kernel weighs the same on my scale.IMG_4706.JPGIMG_4703.JPGIMG_4704.JPGIMG_4705.JPG
