H335 Results, Anyone Have a Guess What's going on?

Great advice on sensitivity above!
For further reference, I dump H335 under an 80TTSX in my 6x45AI as a (cold weather) deer load.
For (warm weather) chuck shooting, H322 under an 87Vmax.
REM 7.5s, regardless...

Both are superbly accurate!

H335, use a thick cup primer. CCI BR-4 or Rem 7 1/2. Read Boyd's post on the issue of the 450. I backed charges off for the use of the 450, but it seemed to over ignite the powder vs a slower ignition of the 7 1/2. A CCI primer for use in AR's may be a choice also, but I have never used them.

We started shooting ground squirrels with H335 in 1975. Rule of the day was to not shoot max loads in hot weather. So, find out what is a max load in your rifle...not rocket science, just remember to record the temp you are shooting in and back off from what is the safe working max load for that temp in that particular barrel.

If you can't deal with H335, go straight to benchmark for use in 55g bullets, it is outstanding at blistering speeds in a 223 12T.

FWIW The very first handload I ever assembled, on advice from our county rangemaster, for my then new R700 VS, was 223 Rem, Winchester case, Sierra 53-gr MatchKing, and H335. But primer was Rem 7- 1/2. It was quick to tune under 1/2 MOA even with my rather indifferent bench technique. But I never tested for temperature sensitivity on paper, only on ground squirrels; alas, they were taciturn on the topic.

" -.010 off the lands which gave me a much shorter (2.170) OAL than the Sierra book of 2.250."

1- This is part of your problem, short FB will contribute to hitting pressure earlier than a generous FB, all other factors being equal.

2- You mention Piercing and Blanking? Piercing is a firing pin problem Blanking is a pressure problem or large pin hole not being able to support the primer cup, Yours appears to be blanking. A thicker cup primer can help but ultimately just back off the charge and lower your pressure. Easy fix, if the stove is hot stop touching it!

Listen to the rifle the short FB, high FPS and blanking = pressure

With all the modern powders that have come on the market i don't understand why people continue using temperature sensitive powders. Is it flows so much better than a extruded powder ? Extreme powder/short cut flow pretty good.I abandoned ball powder years ago and carefully weight weigh each charge for my annual Prairie dog shoot. No big deal.

How many competitive shooters use ball powders ? Inquiring mind would like to know.

Don't know about anyone else's reasons, but I still have about 40-50 lbs. to use up and it does flow well through a powder measure -- a couple of good reasons. Going to use up several pounds next week on PD's. If I ever use it up, I'll go to one of the small grain extruded powders (which I already use in some rifles).

Just had one of those head slapping moments while reading your comments. According to my calculations the rotational speed of my bullet at 3563 FPS is 320,670 RPM which is WAY above Hornadays RPM rating on their bullets. The fact these even stayed together long enough to punch a hole in the paper is astounding and probably had to do with the fact the air temps was a humid 90+ F and getting pretty thin.

Today I loaded up a new batch starting at 24.7 grains, a 3000 fps load according to Sierra's manual, and working up in .3 grain increments, all powered by a CCI450 and H335. BTW the H335 was mfg'd in 2016 if that makes a difference. Lot code 1021116 3115.

Will report after tomorrows range session.

Thanks again for all the comments and advice.

Apologies for the long post, Guys. In need of some school'n here.

Started Load development with my Savage 12FV and (not new) Criterion 26" 8 twist barrel in 223 Rem. Been shooting this awhile but decided to try out the Hornaday 52 gr. HPBT Match and H335, CCI400 and Winchester brass on it's 12 cycle. Never tried H335 before but had an unopened pound sitting in the cabinet so...what the heck?

Sierra manual lists this combination for it's accuracy load, 26.9 grs at 3300 fps. with a maximum load of 27.6 grs. I deviated from my normal routine of start low and work up looking for all nodes. I thought I had a pretty good idea how it would shoot in my rifle.

Loaded up 10 sighters at 26.9 grains and -.010 off the lands which gave me a much shorter (2.170) OAL than the Sierra book of 2.250. Nevertheless, the charge only filled the case to near the bottom of the shoulder, so plenty of room.

Began shooting with a cold barrel and Magnetospeed attached, 86 F, winds 8 to 12 and boxing the compass (switching from all directions). First shot when straight into the 1" dot at 100 yds, at 3479 fps, which is 179 fps faster than book and sped up with successive shots. All followed the first into the dot.

1 3479
2 3511
3 3520 10 min break, scratch head, record velocities.
4 3506
5 3527
6 3547 Cease Fire break, marvel at target, but no one else there.
7 3508
8 3532
9 3563 Pierced primer, disassembled bolt
10 3518

Average speed 3521, SD 25, ES 84

Barrel never got that warm, due to Cease Fire and breaks, but you can see a definite pattern.

By the 9th round I pierced a primer and had to disassemble the bolt to remove the piece of primer cup jamming my firing pin. Group measured .6 moa for nine rounds with the 10th taking it out to .9 moa after the bolt disassembly. A pretty good start aside from the extreme velocity, but never got to the rounds exploring further towards the lands before I quit the test due to primer blanking.

I think I see ignition issues that maybe a CCI450 or Rem 7 1/2 might remedy, and no doubt I'll cut back on the charge too. I've read that ball powder is hard to light and magnum primers are standard. Any comments or experiences on this powder and primer would be appreciated.

Any opinions/ experiences regarding H335 being extremely temperature sensitive?

BTW: I measured the Sierra 52 gr p/n 1400 and compared it to the 52 HPBT Match. They were identical in diameter and bearing length as near as I could tell.

Any help to explain this experience would be appreciated. This barrel is not known by me to be exceptionally fast. I typically shoot 69 to 73 grain bullets out of this barrel and get expected results.
Try CCI 41. I'm shooting the same setup and have noticed that it's more accurate when warmed up
