H322 vs H4198 (Extreme)

Have searched the internets but with no relevant results.

I've been using some H322 with great results but need a bit more speed. I'm right at shoulder neck juncture with it but just not getting the speed I'm looking for; close, very close. I can't get enough in case to get what I'm wanting before running out of capacity.

H4198 is just a bit faster per burn rate charts. Will H4198 Extreme give me just that bit more speed needed versus H322 per case capacity or are they too close to make a difference? Or should I take the next leap and go for a significantly faster powder?

What length drop tube are you using?

Hoping not to be "un-gentlemanly",,,,but it would also be helpful to know what cartridge you're shooting in .224 caliber.

George
Proprietary cartridge I'm work on. Let's just say its capacity is similar to 223 and 222.

Just trying to find out if H4198 would provide a bit more velocity over H322 or are they so close there would be no advantage and should look for something faster. I've been testing H322 and it's doing very good but need to go further.

This is a perfect example of where a copy QuickLoad would be a good investment. With the correct inputs, you can obtain predictions in silico for pressure/velocity using a wide range of different powders.

Based on my (limited) experience I'd say that H4198 would be much too fast for a cartridge with similar capacity as a .223 or .222.

I say that because I use H4198 in my 20 Vartarg...normally 18.5 with a 32gr Vmax.

Have you posted over at the Saubier.com forum? That's the "go to" forum for small caliber lovers and experts.

Hard to believe that with all the experience and knowledge here nobody has some h322 vs h4198 input.

Local Cabela's has 1# of h4198 that I can get today for testing this coming week but rather not waste the $ if there's no minimal advantage over h322.

Have you tried h322 in the 20 Vartang?

No, not a member there. Have read some things there from time to time.

I have not....have used AA1680, Lil Gun, RL7 and I understand Accurate 2200 is supposed to be good...never tried it.

I just took a quick look over at Saubier and see that folks have used slower powders such as H335 and 8208, so I'm sure H322 is also used by some.

With your permission I'll post your question over there and let you know what kind of response it get.

BTW, what weight bullet are you using, or plan to use?

George

Deaddick, years ago I shot H4198 and H322 in a 6PPC. H4198 was all over the map, one day great, one day not so great. I went to H322 and never looked back.

I think that a good option would be LT30, then AA2200. Bullet weight is going to be an issue with powder choice.

Good luck!

FWIW - when I started shooting 90 VLDs in .223 several years ago, I tested Varget, Benchmark, H4895, H322, and IMR 8208 XBR for velocity. From a 30" barrel, H4895 was the clear winner, so it's not always the powder with the fastest burn rate that will give the best velocity at the optimal tuned charge weight. Barrel length and bullet weight are going to have a big impact as well. What barrel length do you have and what weight bullet are planning on using? My guess would be that 4198 may be a bit too fast for your purposes. However, as barrel length and bullet weight decrease, the faster powder(s) will usually become the better choice(s) in terms of velocity.

Yes sure. Ask about H4198 vs H322 velocities.

"Drop tube"? (My apologies, I'm a novice reloaded)

PS(edited): If you look at the Hodgdon reloading site, you will see that 222 and 223 maximum loads with a 53 grain bullet and H322 and H4198 yield very comparable velocities. For a 222 and a 53 grain bullet, the Hodgdon data indicates one could gain about 200 fps versus H322 by switching to the ball powder CFE 223. With lighter 40 grain bullets in a 222, Hodgdon data indicates that H4198 will yield approx 160 fps more than H322.
