H1000 Load

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
So I have a 25-06 barrel that reaches max load quite a bit quicker than another barrel chambered with the same reamer. The barrel shoots well but I would like to get a bit more muzzle velocity. It is a hunting barrel, not for paper punching. I have been working with H4831SC and 115 gr Berger VLD's. H1000 would give me a better case fill. Do you think I could squeeze any more muzzle velocity out of the H1000? I have never used it before and it is quite a bit slower on the powder burn rate chart.

Have a look at R26. I was very happy and suprised how it worked in my 270WW.
As to the 25-06, AA3100 which is discontinued gave me speed and accuracy. Some will say and I have been told it is the same as a couple of other powders. I had already tried them and the proof is on the paper, they were not.

Seeing that you asked about H1000...
I use H1000 in my 257 SAUM Imp with the 115 Berger VLD's and get to 3200 FPS with out any problems...
The case is close to being 98% full at 63.0 grains..
Couldn't do that with H4831SC......

Adding to the options from Alliant, RL-23 may give you the velocity you're looking for and better case fill than RL-26. RL-26 is about as dense as a neutron star and you may run into pressure with your barrel before you get the case fill you want. RL-23 is not nearly as dense as RL-26.

Me, I just stuff as much WC-870 into a .25-'06 case as I can and still seat a 120 . . .

My 25-06 loved AA3100. I found an unopened pound and added it to a half pound I knew I had and will shoot it till it is gone. H 4831 was a disappointment in the 25-06. Did you try the Lovex powder.

3100 is indeed a 'magic powder' in the .25-'06. I'm fortunate enough to have three pounds left and I use it sparingly. On the other hand, I have a small car load of WC-870 in the powder closet and a full case of that stuff with a heavy bullet makes for an outstanding medium game load.

I've heard that Lovex is producing the 3100 formulation but I have yet to try it. I may have to order a pound and do a side by side, but I'll be pissed if I light off ~ 275 grains of 3100 just to find out that they're not the same stuff!

I couldn't get on the Lovex website but I had researched it at one time and the powder company in the Czech Republic comes right out and says they are the ones that made it for Accurate. I don't have WC870 but have a bunch of WC872, never even thought of trying it in the 25-06.

Thanks for the response. No, I have not tried Lovex. I had a previous barrel that I was happy with H4831SC. It shot extremely well and had good MV. I still hat that barrel but it's a heavy beast to drag around hunting.

N560 will get you some velocity

I ran a few different powders on QuickLOAD. I like what I see on H1000 regarding Pressure and MV, but I'm looking at 106.4% case fill on a max load. Case fill on N165 is about ideal but MV lags a bit with regards to maximum chamber pressure. Ramshot Magnum looks promising. Do you all have any experience with that powder with regards to temp stability?

In my own 25-06, I was surprised when I tried RE25 and 110gr Accubonds or 115gr Partitions.
Velocity was right up there, but when ALL 3 bullets were touching with the top 3 loads, I couldn’t let that go without serious consideration. This load out performed RE22 speeds by quite a lot.

Cheers.

Thanks for the tip. I ran some numbers on QuickLOAD and it looks promising except it will be 104% fill. RE26 looks good with a 96% fill. I need to do some testing in my barrel. After running numbers on QuickLOAD I'm leaning towards testing RE 25,26 and Ramshot Magnum. Of the powders I have ran on QuickLOAD, only RE26 has end of combustion before base of the bullet exits the muzzle in my 23" barrel.

N165 ranks coolest burning and comparatively low rate of rise of bbl temp supports the notion. Barrel life extender ? Accuracy generally very good with wide nodes. Gives up 100 FPS to several you are considering. Typical single base temp sensitivity

I have not tried VV165 in the 25-06 but it works well in my 6.5-284 and that case has almost exactly the same case cap. as the 25-06. Seems like a good idea to me. The heat chart that was posted on this forum showed VV165 to be right next to H1000, both are very easy on a barrel if this chart is to be believed. N560 not so much. I was always told you could not get enough H1000 in the case to get a reasonable speed.

I'll try running the 165 on QuickLOAD. After running H1000 on QuickLOAD, I would agree that I most likely can't get enough of it in the case. I'm not too worried about barrel life as I have been unhappy with this one from the get go. Was hoping to take it on a PD hunt and put some wear on it sending 75 grain Vmaxes down it but the hunt never materialized. This is my first and will be my last Rock Creek barrel. May have been a fluke, but I'll go back to Brux or Krieger.

I was able to secure some Reloader 26 yesterday at an LGS. This morning I loaded 7 rounds in .5 grain increments and fired them over a magneto speed. The lowest charge was 60 fps faster than the charge of H4831SC I was using. There was only 8 fpps difference between load #'s 6 & 7. I'm guessing that is an indication that I'm getting maxed out for the amount of powder being utilized inside the barrel. Loads 6 & 7 gave an increase in velocity over my H4831SC rounds of 260 & 268 fps respectively. Rounds 5 & 6 were only 2 fps different and in a different speed node from #'s 7 & 8. My next test will be a ladder test. We are having too much wind today to proceed with that. Following the ladder test I'll pick a charge weight and proceed with seating depth testing. If I can get satisfactory accuracy, I believe I'll stick with the Reloader 26. I am not getting severe primer flattening, or heavy bolt lift and my case expansion is very reasonable.
