H-S Precision stock finish

I would just send it back to HS. That's not normal. Let them fix it. They've had good turnaround time.
Two problems with that. First, I have "modified" the stock by opening up the barrel channel to clear my heavy barrel, and I didn't buy it direct from H-S. I got it from Midway $40.00 cheaper on sale.

I usually just "grin and bear it" but I think you are right, this is ridiculous.
I’m going to agree with you, that appears like the splatter paint recipe was off. I’d be asking questions to H&S Precision about quickly getting a replacement. Move yours to the front of the line. Because they offer refinishing for their stocks, I know they can fix it and I’d be pushing them. I’m sure you already waited for that stock to be built and they should quickly get it fixed.

I'll call them, but I have my doubts, as I have had to do some sanding on the barrel channel, and I got it through Midway at a discounted price because of a sale. They probably won't answer the phone on the weekend.

That is the second stock like this that I have seen pictures of. The first was a Rem 700P from 2019. Not what they used to look like.

HS customer service is very good. I had a customers stock once that I just finished up bedding and a couple of weeks later it developed a crack in the action area. Called them, they said no problem on the bedding we will tape around it! Had the stock back in less than 2 weeks. Great service in my book. Call them.

Krylon or Rustoleum,1 of them have a web finish in a rattle can
Sand it smooth pick a ground coat color and a opposing web color.
You can get Spraymaxx aerosol 2k matte clear to lock it down, you can get it off Amazon

Here’s one that I did much like you described. I used Krylon OD Green for the base and then hit it with Krylon splatter paint before spraying it with a matte clear. The Krylon splatter paint was hard to find for a while and I was able to find some at Plaza Art that I liked a little better.

That looks great. Did you sand off the huge lumps, use a sanding block, mask off the butt, etc. Please tell me the whole thing.

Do your self a favor. If you are gonna sand them off. Use a palm sander... or start buying ibuprofen and protein shakes.

I'm in a state of confusion here. I would have loved to make this a project 20 years ago when I was still a youngster at 60 and had a nice shop to work in, but I have neither youth nor space these days. While I could still manage it now, it wouldn't be fun.
Ok then send it back. Who do I go to? I bought it from Midway at a sale price and sanded out the barrel channel. So do I go to them for a return, or go to H-S?

If I was HS and you called me to discuss your stock my first question would be, "if you were unhappy with the finish why didn't you return it to Midway before you opened up the barrel channel?" But despite that, I would ask you the barrel diameter and send you a replacement stock that would fit your barreled receiver. You may be pleasantly surprised what they will do for you. And, if not then I would do this....
That thing is rougher than a cobb.knock it back 320/500 and repait it.

and then this.....

At this point you have little to lose contact both H-S and Midway except time. Maybe between the two you get an option better than refinishing a stock project.

That one started as a black plastic “tupperware” stock, so it was pretty smooth to start with. All I did was wipe it down with alcohol to remove any oils before I painted it green. Then I hit it with the splatter paint and matte clear. No sandpaper was used. I did tape off the butt pad.

I would at least have a conversation with HS Precision about your stocks finish. If it doesn’t work out, you have nothing to lose by trying to fix it yourself. You’re definitely going to want to use a palm sander because you have a lot of material to remove.

Eagle. you are right, I may have screwed myself by sanding the barrel channel, I couldn't blame them for refusing a return. I think I will go-ahead and just try a return to Midway. All I have to lose is time.

You ARE,.. "Stuck" with it, .. IMO Trying to Return, a "Modified" stock to seller,.. will be, Fruitless !
So 'I'd Fix it yourself like, Bc'z and muleystalker said or, just Put, a Kydex Cheek Riser on it, to AVOID the roughness on cheek and get yourself, a PERFECT Cheek "Weld" ,.. in the process.
Good Luck, My H-S Stock, is nowhere near that, Rough but, I use, a Kydex Riser on mine, anyway.
My H-S Stock with the alum ribs / Pillars and, Glass Bedded,.. shoots amazing, in 6 XC

The stock is taking a little trip back to Midway. I just went to their website and they sent me a label to print. I just got back from the UPS Store where they gave me "the look". They must have remembered the little scene from a year ago. I had brought in a box just like this one and they asked me what was in it. I said it's a gun stock. They got "the look", stepped back a couple feet and said "Sorry sir, we can't ship that". I said "why not, it's just a piece of wood". There was a few more words and I said "well this is the last time you'll see me".
There were no questions today and I felt like saying something, but I held my tongue.
I hope this works.

When I must use UPS, i seem to quite often ship robotics parts, canoe paddles and shafts for go carts.

At 80 plus years and no shop or power tools? Wrap that abomination up and send to Bc'z. Send funds to cover the spray cans and a bottle of Bulliet. Of course we will need to see the finished product ourselves.
