H&R M 12

I've had one for quite some time, purchased from the CMP long ago. Mine is a great shooter, but I've always been plagued with the mystery fliers.

My rifle will consistently throw 1 or 2 shots while stacking up the others. Below is a typical 10 shot group @ 50 yards (front rest & rear bag). This behavior is seen with multiple brands on ammo, although some brands don't throw as wide a flyer. I even went so far as to mount the rifle in a fixture to see if it was me, but the same behavior was seen.

In my reading over the years, I've heard people claim these rifles were known to have tight spots in the bore. Since mine is more of a "fun gun" I've never really pursued getting a replacement barrel.

There was a guy named Ken Viani that made mounts for these rifles that are absolutely rock solid, but I believe he discontinued production some time ago though. BKL also makes mounts that work well on the M12.

Great rifles for the money though!

Yes, Ken Viani is no longer making his mount. I didn't care for it as it positioned the scope too far forward for the BR shooting. I ended up making my own. the BKL cantilever mount will work too as it can mount to the first sight block on the barrel.

I bought a NIB M12 through the CMP about 20yrs ago, and tried shooting prone with the factory stock, which was - as has been mentioned - a club. Was going to invest the time & money in a Richards Micro-fit prone stock for it, as I'd seen several photos of such a stock online at the time. But then I started thinking about how much time & money it was going to cost to buy adjustable cheekpiece & 3-way buttplate hardware, and to install them, finish the inlet & exterior, and decided instead to take the advice of a good friend who was a stockmaker, and traded it to Mac Tilton for a nice used Anschutz 1611 that came with basic Anschutz iron sights. IIRC, he asked $435 boot for the trade, including shipping - one of the better choices I've ever made when it comes to upgrading rifles...

I bought one years ago from the CMP as well. The trigger easily adjusted down to a couple ounces. I had the action drilled and tapped and it was a great shooter. I sold when we stopped shooting are informal benchrest shoots. It was too big and heavy for anything but bench shooting.
