H&R M-12 vs 82G?

Does anyone have information on comparative accuracy between examples of these 2 rifles. I know where a very nice M-12 is. It appears to be much like the 82G in that both are large, heavy single shots with iron sights.

The M-12 has Redfield sights, Palma in back and Olympic in front. At least as good as the Kimber sights.

I had never heard of the M-12, but it looks like a fine rifle. The Kimber is well known, but I can only afford one of them. Accuracy would determine which. I can't take the M-12 and shoot it, so can't make a direct comparison with my 82G.

The best answer is to buy the H&R and have a shoot-off, but just can't justify it.

Not a bad problem to have though.

Thanks, Tom

I have an M-12 that regularly used to beat several 82G's. Mine is quite accurate with the right ammo. Buy it and enjoy!

My M12 outshoots the 82 G's that I have and is a very nice handling rifle. I was suprised at the consistency of the rifle and it definately likes RW 50.

Thanks for the replies. I have decided to bite the bullet. Try to buy the M-12, shoot the comparison, and sell the loser. Sounds like the H&R will hold it's own or better. May have an 82G (or M-12) on the market soon.

Either way, it'll be fun.

Ken, does it require drilling and tapping the receiver? I don't have the rifle yet, but a scope mount might swing the decision. The 82G can take a scope without modification, so I could compare apples to apples.

Thanks, Tom

Ken's mounts do not require drilling or tapping. They mount to the holes that hold the rear peep sight onto the receiver. I have one and it's a first class piece of equipment.

the H & R model 12 is a knockoff of the Winchester 52. clunky stock, but well made rifle. a good one will shoot w/ 52's..40x..37's..the redfield sights I my oppinion are better than the kimbers. the best shooting .22 target rifle I've owned is an anschultz 52..bar none.the model 12 is a good club shoot rifle..check around for parts availability..a good price on this rifle w/ sights is $400 or less

I had to pay significantly more than $400 for this one, but did get it. I checked the latest Blue Book, Gun Broker and Guns America for some guidance. The prices I found were higher than I expected, around $700 without sights and only one with sights, for $1200 asked.

This rifle is in at least 98% overall condition and has the palm rest listed in the blue book. It also has a vertically adjustable aluminum buttplate that I think is not original. It does have a full set of inserts for the Olympic front sight. Both scope blocks are on the rifle, but I didn't want to put a Lyman or Unertl on it. Much too expensive (and fragile). The Viani base looks great, so I ordered one.

The only problem I can find is that the trigger has a slight creep before releasing that I would like to eliminate. I took the rifle out of the stock, and the trigger has a lot of moving parts that I haven't figured out yet. It appears to have only one adjustment, but I don't want to diddle with it without knowing how it works.

If anyone know how to take the creep out of the trigger, I'd appreciate it.

Got high hopes for the rifle with a scope on it. I'm not good enough with irons to really find out how accurate it is. I have about 30 rds of R-50, some SK rifle match, and partial boxes of Green Tag and Fed Ultramatch to try in it. The R-50 and SK have been consistently accurate in other .22's I've shot them in, including the 82G and a 10-22T.

I'll do the shoot-off with the 82G at 50 yds, but it may be a while. Too much going on to get to some of the stuff I'd rather be doing.

Thanks to all for the info.

RimfireCentral has a forum on the H&R rifles. Check out their "stickies" The have a manual you can download that should help you.

Received the mount from Ken Viani. As advertised. Very solid when installed, and looks good anodized.

I checked out the cantilever mount that was linked on another thread, but decided to spend the extra money for one that anchors at both ends.

Fair price and fast service.

Thanks to all, Tom
